I was originally thinking of doing TSLs, but found a good deal on these 42” treps on dirty life’s so I jumped on it. Little bigger than the “old” 37’s! About half a hernia bigger I’d say!

Nah, but it’s not the end of the world. They’re c load so maybe they will flex a bit better than the e load swampers? The extra half foot diameter might come in handy, too haha at $4k I think it was a pretty good deal

This place got exciting to read for a few minutes.

@Dayman Karate you ever wheeled a rig with a 120+ wheelbase? Mines at 128 ish and can be miserable sometimes. Can’t imagine adding another foot.

 

It ain’t ideal! But unless you start from scratch, what is? The 42’s will help that a bit, but I bet the V6 and no crawlbox gets me before the wheelbase though.

Haha, thanks . It is just a fact man. Once you get started, you will continue building and modifying things to the point that DD will no longer be practical or desirable - even if the truck rides nicely on the road. Better to have a dedicated trail rig and keep your DD unmolested lol.

As I recall, the trendy obsession with super low rides was the primary reason why many tacoma owners doing link suspensions favored 3-links vs 4-links. It's easier to do with a 3-link if you want to retain most of the truck's integrity (meaning, looking like a tacoma vs looking like buggy at the end of the build). It had nothing to do with the idea that a 4-link could not be done successfully on a tacoma, or that it could not be functional or practical for wheeling.

I don't think that trend exists anymore necessarily. There was a guy on this forum (forget his forum name) who built quite a tall 1gen on 4-links way back when everybody was trying to build the lowest possible rig. His was way over 30" frame height I think, which at the time was considered heresy around here LOL. But his truck seemed functional all the way around.

So...if you don't care about having a bit of a taller ride, or having to sacrifice the truck's integrity to keep it low with a 4-link, you'll be fine!

 

I would wager the lack of a panhard plus full hydro would allow me a bit more opportunity for a lower ride/more uptravel.

 

Agree. Those are the benefits of a 4-link, and the reason why I suspect many people choose it when building buggies.

Haven't seen very many Tacomas with 4-links. The ones I've s seen were either very tall, or low but essentially those were buggies at that point (nothing wrong with it, but that's not what many people want when building their trucks). Most linked Tacomas out there are 3-link, so it's hard to have a point of reference for what a low riding 4-link looks like.

Would love to see it though. Look forward to your project. Always cool to see different approaches and way of doing things.

 

Thanks! It’s a trailered rig so I’m not concerned with its roadworthiness or if it looks like a Tacoma when it’s done. It will have one purpose- provide AC and heat while providing a proper smack down offroad. If it fails at either at least I’ll have some one tons built for a proper buggy/bouncer. I don’t want to sit so low with a long truck that I belly out on everything nor be so tall that my COG is doodoo. I’m excited to try something out of the ordinary for second gens. Tons of other four link builds to gather inspiration from though luckily.

 

This thing done and 4-linked yet?

 

I wish haha two kids under two and owning a business don’t make for much spare time. It’ll be spring before it’s done I’m sure.

 

That's what we all say.... until it's 8 months later and you realized you're way behind schedule.

I just said spring not what year

 

I started on mine in January 2021 and finished in September 2022. Working on it minimum between an extra full time job and being a full time student. And having a newborn during this period.

November 2022, its back in surgery again and this time, I hope to complete it by December 2022, not December 2023.
