My Dad has a '98 SR5 with power locks and windows, and alarm system. His key fob is busted and no longer works unless you hold the internals a certain way to the battery. It's been this way for a while and he's just been coping because he wasn't sure if any replacement would do and couldn't find one exactly like it anywhere.

I'm not even sure if his key fob is the original one, it's a weird kind of boomerang shape with one big red button and a couple smaller ones. Can't find any matching examples online.

Does anyone have experience with replacing and reprogramming the key fob for a 1st gen? Is the one he has the original fob or a replacement the previous owner used?

Thought I'd see if I could help him finally fix it this Christmas :D thanks y'all!

Do you have the original remote with the fcc#?

I'm unsure if the key fob he has is the original. Any clue what indicates if the remote is the original one? I haven't been able to find any examples of what it should look like, never seen a key fob like it to be honest. Should the fcc# be on the back?

Look for the keyless entry module. It should have FCC#.

Take a picture of the back of your key fob.

I tried this sequence once back when we attempted to fix it shortly after he broke it. Unsure if the replacement key fob we got was the wrong kind or if this sequence doesn't work for his vehicle. I probably should've mentioned its a manual transmission and has the red push button for (i believe) turning on and off the alarm on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. I've seen a different programming sequence which uses this button, which may be the one that's supposed to be used for his truck?

You have to get one with the right FCC#.
