Glad to hear you handled it well. I remember the first time I drove in snow I hit a pack of ice and ended up facing the other way. Thankfully I learned my lesson at about 5 miles an hour in a ski lodge parking lot.

I'm sure airing down the tires helped, but the driver is the ultimate link in the chain, right? Ain't nothin' you can do once you run out of talent.

This is my first "real" winter with snow and stuff, and let me just say that the new feature on the 09s - traction control - is the BEST THING EVER! As soon as i start to slip, it fixes it... I've even TRIED to break the back tires loose and it takes over almost instantly.

It's already kicked in about 20 or 30 times...

Now, if I want to go have some fun in an empty parking lot somewhere, there is a button to disable it, so I get the best of both worlds! :)

Down, and to the left of the steering wheel there are two buttons. One disables the side airbags (roll over only, not in a side impact), and the second, depicted by a car with squiggly lines underneath, shuts off the traction control. I believe pressing it once sets it into "auto", which disables it under 30ish Kph, 18 Mph (not sure of the exact speed), and pressing and holding it for 3 seconds disables it permanently. I plan on disabling it ALOT when I head back home for Christmas:D.

If this is your first real winter, it's probably a good idea to take it to a parking lot and see how she handles the snow/ice.

We got a serious dump of snow. I just spent the last 10 hours running around in the snow, both in 4x4 and 2x4. God it's fun.

Traction control? Pffftt. It's more fun to have it in 4x4 and rally it around corners.

Driving in the snow has always been great, my girls love it especially when we go place others have not. They like the rooster tails that fly when you make turns etc.
But then it does not take much to please young children, my wife thinks I'm nuts, but I did teach her how to drive in 4 wheel.

Didn't know about the multiple settings... Good to know. I'll check it out in the manual for the exact settings, etc...

I totally agree! Fun to do that - except when you're on a city street in rush hour traffic...

I plan to find a parking lot somewhere soon. I think we're supposed to get a lot of snow shortly...

Yeah, little hard to do it then, but it's fun to get stuck in traffic, jump the meridian to get to another street burn out a donut and then drive off leaving people staring. :D

    Yeah I'm a show off.

hell yeah, controlled sliding is awesome! I still need to get better at it though, so I keep it to the empty parking lots for now.

Fwew, I'm glad we can disable the traction control! I've only had the truck for a few weeks and today was the first ride in the snow... it did fine, but when I tried to get a little sideways exiting a parkinglot it made a kinda 'chatter noise' and the damn thing didn't slip an inch... I guess that's a good thing. I really have alot to learn, or rather unlearn with this new truck. It's the first truck I've had with ABS, Traction control, and 2 or 3 other buttons... the only thing I am familiar with is the locker. It was really sweet throwing it into 4hi on the highway at 55.I usually have to get out and lock hubs.

I've gotten so used to it, I can rally onto merge lanes where other people have to crawl on and yield. Down side. It scares the shit out of people and can cause THEM to have accidents.

I actually parked my truck parallel to another truck by 180ing it in 4WD and getting the truck to turn AND go backwards. My god it was beautiful. He didn't think so though. He glared at me. Probably thought I was going to his is POS. (And by park I mean same picture as the TW trucks in the upper right corner of this site. The blue and dirty truck)

That Chattering is your ABS kicking in. I don't have Traction Control (thank god) so I don't know how ABS works with it.

True. I read that drivers who are new to ABS can have a greater chance of having an accident because they're used to pumping the breaks, which will prevent ABS from kicking in. Don't know if people have any similar problems with traction control... I'm going to have to find an empty parking lot when I get back to Alberta, and play around with it on and off.

I know this is going to get ignored as usual. When I was 14 yrs old in Illinois I used to sneak my dad's '67 Buick Electra and cruise around town in the snow and ice-no traction control-no ECT-just a set of studded snowtires:D sorry...memories

If you take your foot off of the gas, like you should when you start to lose control, the traction control doesn't kick in, so no, it wouldn't improve your chances of an accident.

I thought that I read that traction control doesn't work in 4 high on here... that's not true. I had to bust through the snow that the plow piled up in front of my driveway yesterday after we got 12" of snow, and wound up with my back tires in the ditch across the street. I put it in 4 high, and it started slipping, then traction control kicked in and I popped out of the ditch.

Personally, I think the traction control is a bit slow to kick in most of the time. I was playing around in the snow, and it usually comes on well after I would have let up on the gas on my own, after a slide is initiated.
