It's not a tract home thing. Installers do this all the time since they don't have to deal with the fallout. It'll probably be ok, but the potential for catastrophic failure is higher. My personal opinion is why risk it?

My A/C unit is in the attic too.
The condensation line is plumbed through the wall and then into the gutter down spout system.
Which ultimately ends out in the back yard.

I wish they would have plumbed into the house drain like our old house.
But it’s new (2019) and I’m not messing with it.

You should have seen the shitshow at our Tolls Brothers townhouse. It had two separate systems, for the 1st floor and 2nd floor, like the house we are in now. The air-conditioners were installed pretty well, but the furnaces were crammed into a utility room with the water heater, and there was one condensate pump for two systems! To be fair though, the second floor system in that house worked better than the one in this house...

Central air-conditioners at my friend's parents' house; I took these last Saturday. The house was built in 1990 and neither of these units are original. The Gibson (right) was installed prior to my friend's parents buying it, but the other unit died my friend's parents replaced it with the American Standard (left); I told them not to buy another Nordyne product when the Gibson dies...

This 1980s York is one of three units located at my other friend's house; I took all of these pictures an hour ago. The house was built in 1964 and did not originally have central air. It has oil baseboard heat, and the Yorks were both installed in the 1980s. My friend thinks the York is from the 1970s, but I think it is more early 1980s. The lone remaining York turns on but does not cool the house, and my friend's parents are prioritizing other home improvement project before replacing the A/C...

The Sanyo ductless mini-split was installed around the same time as the Yorks. They have lived in the house since 1997 and have never turned this unit on...

Maybe it's a little less expensive to get done out of Season.

This was obviously a system that just been replaced given the rough condition of the furnace; I only wanted the air-conditioner at first. You can even see the brand new air-conditioner in the background of the above photo, so I knew I would be well within my rights to come back with the Taco and haul it home.

As stated above, this was pretty obviously a replaced system; I figured I'd knock on the door just to be sure, and the owner initially thought I was crazy, but once I told him that I like taking things apart, he told me I could take whatever I wanted; I bargained with my dad to let me stash the condensing unit and indoor coil in the garage, but was not initially going to take the furnace. My plan from the beginning was to scrap the aluminum and copper once I autopsied the outdoor unit...

Complete system. Not even 12 years old and in fairly decent shape, but from what I could tell by looking at it, the indoor coil rusted out and developed a leak...

After taking Porter home and coming back with the truck. As you can see, the indoor coil is the likely culprit here. This is an R410a system with a 90% efficiency furnace, and both the A/C and furnace seemed to be in decent shape prior to removal, so I have no idea why they didn't just replace the coil...

As I look closer at these pictures, I'm thinking that the condensate pump failed and rusted out the indoor unit, which is why the whole thing was replaced...
