Should I trade my Tacoma for a Silverado Trail Boss?

Probably the unpopular opinion, but I'm 27 and looking for a full size truck. I've owned my Tacoma for 90k miles and 4 years and I love the heck out of it, but I'm kind of considering going full size for no reason other than the sound of a v8 + borla, long term reliability of the 5.3, and the 6' bed for my dirtbikes.

Am I crazy to buy a Silverado trail boss for 2x the price of my Tacoma? Pics of taco for ref.

Long term reliability and the newer 5.3l’s don’t go In hand. But if you need/want a full-size I guess it’s not the worst move (Dodge hemi, bleh)

if you go the trade in route, take all the aftermarket stuff off the truck you can and sell them seperate. You won’t get your money back from the mods

I traded my 05 pre runner access cab 2.7 manual for a gmc 4x4 and liked the larger seating area. Then I traded the gmc for a 2018 taco off road with the v6, did not like the shorter bed plus it did not tow my 6000 lb trailer at all. Traded it got a power wagon love the thing. Still wanted my old taco back so I got a 2023 4x4 taco access cab 2.7 and am as happy as a clam. Still have the power wagon. I went back and forth, figured I wanted two tools for where I’m going and what I’m doing. My wife has a f450 king ranch 4x4 4 doors and a long bed her car is a trd RAV. Thankfully we’re retired and get to play more. Though I did start teaching part time cause I enjoy helping kids find their way. I say go for it, you can always get another.

 

As far as reliability goes that's a step backwards. But if you want it, go and get it. I have also wanted to get a full size truck, but also want reliability.

The new 5.3 is anything but reliable. New trucks are being unloaded at the dealer with bad lifters which means removing cylinder heads to replace on those trucks. And worst case they destroy the cam or engine when they fail.

 

Reliability of the 5.3? Do a search of lifter issues on any GM product with the cylinder deactivating lifter setup before you make a decision. Cheaper to get a trailer to haul your dirt bikes and use the Tacoma.

 

Why not a 2.5 gen Tundra?

If you really insist on a GM, at least go for the 6.2. Also make sure to get the 10 speed as the 8 speed is junk.

 

Why ask a bunch of random people on the internet? Do your research and spend your money the way you like. At the end of the day, the decision doesn’t affect anyone here but you. Good luck with whatever you decide!

 

GM is just not a reliable truck. Plenty of friends have them—these trucks are a disaster. If you want a reliable V8, the 5.7 Tundra is #1 by a wide margin.

 

You could get a Slverado 2500 Z71 WT or LT and avoid the 5.3 might be cheaper than a Trail Boss, if you get the Alsakan package you get mud tires and a vinyl foor.

 

Toyota walked away from the best truck they ever made. Toyota really should have built Tundra Classic.

I would personally skip 1/2 tons and go to 3/4 or 1 ton. Way more capability for the same or sometimes less money. Saw a new F350, 4 door, 8ft bed, XLT, FX4, locking 3.73, 7.3, dual battery, HO alternator, upfitter switches for 60k. That's damn tempting to me.

 

Buy two, just in case you don't like the color of the first one.
