Help a brotha out. New/used gas tank replacement.

Hey all,

a few weeks ago my truck broke down on the side of the road. It’s a 2017 Toyota Tacoma access cab trd off road with 60k miles. I thought maybe I ran out of gas. But it turns out someone drilled a hole into my gas tank. I haven’t had my truck for 2 weeks and I am dying. The insurance company (little lizard company) is being a pain in the ass and I am just going to try and source a gas tank on my own. Does anyone know anywhere to source a list 17 taco gas tank for a replacement? I appreciate all your guys help. Take a look at the photos of me broken down on the side if 80.

 

I've had good luck finding used parts locally with Car-Part. It's a database of local scrap yards.

I saw one on Craigslist long ago and thought that I should buy it just in case but decided I didn’t have a good place to store it. You will probably have the best luck finding one in a wrecking yard.

So very sorry this happened to you.
It has to be less expensive and less hassle than insurance to simply repair that hole. Why the hell Toyota won’t make a metal tank is beyond me. When everything else rusts out at least we’ll have a plastic gas tank left. ROFL

 

I would think there would be something to plug the tank. It is a drill hole. 1/4” maybe?

That’s nuts. Just sold my stock wheels to a guy with the same truck as yours that had the same thing happen to him. Said it cost over $3000 to get it replaced. He had a skid plate installed to protect his.

 

Drilling holes in gas tanks is not a normal vandalizing act. You were targeted for whatever reason. If it really was vandalism you should file a police report to document the event. If you don't have comprehensive coverage, don't expect your insurance to cover the damage. There are several DIY repair kits on the market.

 

It wasn't vandalism, they stole his gas....

 

Hey I really appreciate all of the comments. It’s technically vandalism. I talked to Dixon PD, where it happened and I even spoke with a police officer.Someone was vandalizing cars in the area and they told me it’s totally unrelated. I talked to the building manager and tried to look at the camera footage but he said the trees were in the way. I mean it’s just kinda like no one cares if people do dumb shit these days. As long as insurance pay for it you will be ok kid.lol. Which is true. But anyway I called the guy from the craigslist post and I think I might try and have the gas tank sent down to Toyota so they can release my baby lol.

It looks like it could be done for under $1500. Did you get a quote from the dealer? It seems an independent shop could do it. The send the bill to the insurance company once completed, add some $$$ for the delay. The videos on installing skid plates show the tank is held up by the two straps that go under the tank.

 

I don’t know. Vandalism makes more sense to me with this.

 

My steel tank was drilled on my well armored 1st Gen. They just drilled the side and not the bottom, so armor doesn’t stop them. They also first tried to drill through the locking gas cap but it wouldn’t unlock for them. I used a tank repair patch to fix it and it worked just fine.

A radiator shop can fix it safely.

The tanks are back ordered for a year.
