3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

Ah, the joys of aftermarket headlights.
First question: Are you sure you installed them correctly?
Second question: Can you post pics of what the pattern looks like against the wall right now?

 

Yeah I installed them correctly. I will take pictures of the alignment tonight.

 

The reason I asked is that if' they're not seated properly, all bets are off.

For fogs or headlights? Those will not fit your 2020 fogs, only 2016-2019 TRD fogs. They will fit your headlights, though yellow headlights are not legal.

 

For fogs. I want a yellow non LED direct replacement

2020 fogs take H16s. You'll have to find older (2016) fogs; those took H11's.

 

H16s are an exceptionally low performing bulb, you will be far better off upgrading the housing rather than trying to improve the performance of the H16 fogs. Even if you do not choose to go with LED, getting a 16-19 OEM TRD H11 fog assembly on the second hand marketplace and using H11 bulbs will provide a huge boost in output while also providing far more bulb tuning options in both white and yellow.

 

That’s what I did crashnburn. Swapped out those H16 pods for a 2019 set. Was a big improvement. But now going to upgrade further with LED pods for maximum upgrade. Why not?

The H16’s were a joke. Don’t know why Toyota downgraded them? Maybe to cut costs? Sad when a safety performance item is degraded on such a popular vehicle. You’d think with tacomas demand on the rise, it would go the opposite way.

 

Are the OEM LEDs still the "best" for performance in 3rd gen?

Yes. You can see the reviews, the v2.0 Morimotos have higher output intensity but lack compliant uplight limiting your night distance vision by having an ultra high contrast cut off that prevents you from seeing beyond the low beam. There is more to the headlight design than just the output intensity, and so far the OEM LED units for the Tacoma do it best.

 

What’s exciting about the new DD products, is no other aftermarket manufacturer makes composite headlights in the USA, and most other performance manufactures lack a proper beam pattern with hot spot placement and/or compliant uplight, much less the ability to exceed OEM LED performance. Diode Dynamics appears to be looking to change all that. Looks very promising for the aftermarket lighting community. No word on Tacoma production yet though.

 

That would be awesome. However, to provide a quality OEM 3rd gen LED headlight assembly that would meet or exceed OEM I don't know how competitive they would be in terms of price. Whether they would be able to produce these domestically or contract overseas with strict quality control. I'm skeptical of anything at this point that could beat OEM.

 

I just pre- ordered the Elite headlights for my Jeep. Pretty stoked!!

 

The new Diode Dynamics Elite series headlights are made in the USA, they are designed to exceed OEM LED performance. They will be expensive, likely the most expensive aftermarket headlights on the market. However based on their Jeep headlights, it still appears competitive in pricing vs OEM LED, while also being higher performing.

 

Need some help or advice. I bought the new harness for the Philips H9 conversion bulbs and had trouble getting the drivers side plastic cap out. I think I damaged the little side finger that holds the center factory cap on because the metal electrode on one side wiggles and has more room than the other side so when I plug in the bulb the one side has intermittent contact with the metal electrode.

Fast forward to completing the swap and driving around and the drivers side low beam goes out. I wiggled the wires and it flickers. I pulled off the bulb and see a little black arc of melted plastic on the colored cap. Do I now need to replace the entire wire harness on that side?

I tried to follow the wire loom but it goes into a larger bundle of wires and gets hidden. Is it easy to order that harness and replace it myself or did I just cost myself a $400 dealer bill?
