They are charging you too much, you can get a new Tacoma for the same or less.

A new Off Road should be around low 40's and have much lower interest rates, so the total cost will be less than the 52K used one you are looking at.

Unfortunately yes, or several years anyways.
It’s a double edged sword; interest rate suck, but are only going to go up.

You were asking for financial advise and my advise is you never take out a car loan for 7 YEARS!!. If you can't afford to purchase a vehicle unless you take out a 6-7 year loan because the monthly payments would be too high you are buying way more vehicle than you can and should afford. Keep it to 4 years or less if possible, but 5 years is not horrible for a newer vehicle. A 5 year loan with your credit score should not be more than 5-5.25% right now so shop around and check credit unions. Also, go online and shop around even if it means going out of state. Heck, I bought a 2020 OR in FL and drove it 1700 miles home and after costs I still saved about 5K. . . . . .Yeah it was a God thing.

If the 39K is the out the door cost and you are putting down 10K, and you want the truck I would look around at other banks, credit unions and see what terms you can get (interest rate etc) on 29K. I am going to bet you can drop that interest a bit if you shop around. If the dealer says you have to finance with them, walk away and don't look back. If they change the price if you want to finance it with another bank, run away and don't look back.

Currently in November the average used car interest rate for your credit score category is 9.56% according to US News and World Report. So the interest rate while it seems high, may or may not be. Check other banks and credit unions and see how they compare and what they are offering. Just be cautious how many times you have a hard pull done on your credit, it will drop it a few points.

In California you may have trouble finding a new one without markup. If the price before taxes etc was 36K on the truck it is not a horrible price these days, In 2020 that was new truck price.

If the 2020 was built pre covid you will have the transmission cooler as well as a pre covid build, that may or may not be important to you.

The interest rate is high, you can shave a few points off that if you shop around for your loan.

You can get a new TRD Offroad for $41,000.
The interest rates? I have no idea. I guess they have really skyrocketed.
Maybe your credit is bad and this place will work with you?
For what you are paying for a used truck it makes much more sense to find a way to get a new one.
So many benefits to getting a new one.

Dealer shenanigan's going on, seems like the salesman, as usual, is keeping you focused on a monthly payment that you like hoping you won't notice you're screwing yourself in the long run so they can get rid of a used truck they paid to much for.
Why don't you get pre-approved at your bank and buy a new one? I'm in CA too and have been seeing new OR's for around 41-42k and the dealers are even negotiating again.

The dealers have got everyone brainwashed that MSRP is a great deal so everyone just jumps on it throwing money around without even trying to negotiate. Here’s another one, in CA

Buy new, you've got the credit and the down payment. As others have mentioned 43-45k otd on a trd or dcsb 4x4 with basic options and led headlights.

I don’t know who you’re referring to when you say “brainwashed”. I am coming with obvious skepticism looking for help so I would call that brainwashed.

i need to crunch the numbers and see what the Apr would be for a new truck to see if it makes sense

Early summer I got a certified pre-owned 2021 trd OR 4x4 with 9k miles for $40k after a lot of bickering. It was a lease turn in. Interest rate was 3.2% which is the worst I’ve had in a while. Now the rate is about double that. I’m in no hurry to pay it off as it’s my only debt and I rather have the cash in the bank.

Go to your bank/credit union and secure your own financing before you even go look at trucks. Find out what the APR spread is for new vs used. Get a pre-approved loan to cover the amount you expect to spend.

Once you've got that part covered you'll be in a good place to start truck shopping. Don't let these dealership sharks take your money for nothing. Finding a decent deal on the truck is hard enough, don't let them get you on financing as well.

Depends. First of all, it is your money so at the end of the day can you justify spending it.

yes, great find a better deal on a truck.
No, hold on to the 2016.
Does your current 2016 not fit your needs? Do you have reasons that you need to buy the newer one for?
Will you be using the 4x4?
Personally I’ll never buy a truck without it…
I hope you can find a better deal dude! The price of 39k may not be that bad, but as you are inquiring about the financing option, you are overpaying a ton in that area.
If your budget is what you’re possibly paying for this one then maybe hold off for a bit and save up more?

I cannot tell you how to spend your money. Personally I wouldn’t buy a used tacoma. No idea how the other person treated it either.
If you’re looking for a trd off road 4x4, every dealer has them. If they don’t, they can get them and they are getting them. Its allocation. I put a deposit on mine before it was even built in summer of 2021. Maybe you do the same. Maybe not. That’s just another possible option if you can’t find any current ones near ya.
What dealer in the 805 area are you looking at.

Going off your username, I am also in the 805 area and can toss some better and some not so good dealer names to you just let me know.

+1 to the above post of using a bank or credit union… that’s what I did. A bit of a pita, but overall, was not an issue.

I believe Toyota financial was doing 3.49 on 48 month loans on new vehicles …. Look into that option

Can you find a new one and pay cash for it?

You might get a better deal.

I doubt if many trucks got sold yesterday or even on black friday. Some dealer somewhere might be willing to make a cash deal.

Cash isn’t king in a dealership. Money is made off the financing of deals. With smaller inventory levels dealers will pass on a cash deal to take a finance deal all day long.
