Nothing exciting for opening day of gun season yesterday. Freezer is a much higher priority than antlers for me so I shot a bigger doe right at dark.

    The chickens are very interested.

I've been using Rem Accutips 20ga 2 3/4 " for several years now since I got the Savage 220.
Killed a bunch of deer with it and have yet to recover a slug.
    Always a pass thru.

While skinning the 5 pointer, I heard the familiar "clunk" of lead hitting the floor.
    Got my slug.
    But why??
    Anyone ballistics savvy here?

All other kills were 25-80 yards out and always in and out.
    This one was 30-40 feet.

Big hole in shoulder is entrance hole. That's usually how the exit looks like.

Just guessing, maybe at that close range the slug didn't reach it's max flying velocity?
Never had an entrance hole look like that.
Maybe the plastic wad didn't break away yet?
    :notsure:

My neighbor swears by his 20 gauge shooting better than a 12 gauge.
The first deer I shot with my .270 had a huge entrance wound and no exit wound. I was shooting Winchester Power Points. My thinking was that the bullet started coming apart in flight.

Maximum velocity is basically as it’s leaving your barrel. Being that it was so close and the bullet is going as fast as it’s going to go. It probably pancaked on Impact. I’ve seen this happen with bullets that aren’t bonded and have a thin jacket like ballistic tips at close range before.

Velocity is its greatest at the muzzle and starts dropping from there, but at 30-40 feet like you say, that's minuscule. Its hard to say what happened IMO. You hit the shoulder, probably enough bone to stop the slug enough to prevent a pass through.
