Which GoPro camera do I go with??

Here is there all their different cameras:

$299.99 HD Helmet HERO
$299.99 HD Motorsports HERO
$269.99 HD Surf HERO
$259.99 HD HERO Naked
$179.99 HD HERO 960
$99.99 SD HERO 170

Obviously, I'm not about to drop $300 on a camera. So could I get by with the HD HERO 960? Or would it be worth it to wait for the Motorsports camera? This would be used mainly on my truck but also when I mountain bike. Thanks everyone

 

you can get them from people like hardracing.com and other places for like 220 for the Hero.. You want the Motorsports Hero.

 

I'm not a big fan of the GoPro's. I use the contour HD. It's cheaper, handles the cold a lot better (I use it a lot in the snow), and is much more compact. Check it out.

My experience in the cold has been the opposite.
I have used my gopro in extremely cold weather while riding my snowmobile. We ride in temps below zero at times, usually 10-30F but at speed. The cam is on my helmet. There are many others I have seen who use them too. Not saying the Contour is not a nice camera, but this has been my experience.

I carry a spare charged battery & 16G card to swap out at lunch.
8+ hours of video with no problems over the last two seasons so I think it handles the cold very well. I have learned to shoot constant I needed a spare battery and/or portable usb charger. We keep one on us anyway for cell phones.
Next year I am wiring the device into my electric shield to have onboard power all the time.

I have also dropped it, hit branches on trees etc. (not off trail thankfully)and the camera has held up really well. I wear a tether with it so its doesn't go flying into the snowbank never to be seen again.

Soo..which to get, I would ask, what are you using it for? The different kits come with different mounts, you can also make your own.

From a strictly video perspective, the GoPro seems to have a higher-quality of capture than the Contour.

The Contour seems to have trouble with varying light conditions, tends to overexpose, and is overall less crisp than the GoPro.

Yeah from what i have heard the contour is better. Im looking into them now also.

 

I like it size, and it seems more durable, as i will be using it for Mountain biking.

 

The 960 lacks a couple of video settings, sticky mounts, & expansion port on the back whch may be a big deal for you if you add the lcd screen later.
Otherwise its the same exact camera.
You can buy the mounts separately now.
The biggest reason I would say motorsport is you get setup with the right mount & you have the expansion port.
Honestly I shoot everything in R4 which is 960.
Either way do the firmware upgrade. You get upside down recording & one button on/off plus a bunch of other things...fixes the 32g card bug.

960 would be a money saver for sure. You guys think if I went with gopro 960 and just buy a seperate suction mount I will be good to go?

 

I'm not looking for any serious video settings. Just record me on trails while mountain biking and off roading in my truck. Would I get good and clear picture with the 960?

 

Sorry for being a noob about this whole thing I just have never heard much info about these things till now....

But why would one want a LCD screen? To watch the video you just took on the trail or something?

I think I would just mount it, record what I want to record, then watch it on my computer when I get home.

 

The LCD screen allows for instant playback for great adjustment. My friend has one, it's pretty badass. I have heard a lot of good come from the GoPro, they're definitely solid cameras.

I said that they didn't handle the cold as well because I've seen people with them when I'm snowboarding and they seem to have problems. But I've also seen people that use them and they work flawlessly.

The biggest thing with the contours is that coming out of the box they dont have the best quality SD card with them. If you upgrade the SD card to a higher memory and a higher bitrate (10 being the highest), then you'll get a better quality picture. The GoPro's use a higher quality card, but still not the best. As far as quality after they have the same cards and such, I dont see much of a difference.

Overall, the reason I have the contour over the GoPro is the size. It's much more compact. Plus, if you have the GPS contour, you can watch the video and follow yourself with google maps at the same time. It's a really cool feature. It's all about what you like more. They're both awesome though.

Haven't gotten it yet. Saving for my best top right now then its either camera or amp/sub. Im thinking go pro.

And I have a Jamis Dakota Elite XC hard tail.
