    I'm not gonna play nice.

    Fuck TiG.

MIG gets the job done 90% of the time!

Spare me the "TIG is so relaxing".

So is trolling in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.

    Im kidding, kinda.

Get the job done, pocket the $ and move on.

    Couldn't resist. Sorry KV.

Hit me with your best shots, guys, I can take it!

Speaking of being rusty... First time in a long time at the TIG machine (go gently, with me @koditten) and I'm pretty sure I'm missing some setup details here, in addition to forgetting how to control my hands... Help!

    1/4" mild steel, 1/8" er70s2, 3/32" ceriated tungsten. 150A. 100% Argon, about 15cfm flow…. #6 cup.

first shot is the outside of a 45* bend, second is the inside.

    What machine are you using?

Proper prep work on the steel?

Your Tig rods were stored correct and not exposed to normal dirt around a shop.

Air born coolant can be nasty if your using any in the machining operations.

Machine set to straight Polarity ? High frequency set to start ?

Tungsten clean not contaminated from not being used?

Steel was ground with a belt that is only used for steel... I did not hit it with a cleaner like acetone or alcohol, tho.
Tungstens are stored in the little holder they come in, which lives in a cabinet.
I ground a new tip on the tungsten. (er, I might have done that more than once... lol. dipped the tungsten on a previous practice weld)
Rod came straight out of the packaging tube.
    DCEN, HF Start.
This is on a miller dynasty 200

A friend thought it could be...
    - too small a cup
    - too much argon flow
    - copper coating on the filler (use a bigger filler rod?)
I also am only using .2sec pre-flow... maybe a little more?

I never use chemical cleaners but for acid on weather exposed Alumimum.

Is your Arc smooth and stable like it should be? Not spitting and sputtering like a mad cat?

Your grinding wheel is only used for tungsten nothing else .

Your sharpen your tungsten the correct way with the point in the vertical direction

Something is cooking up out of the weld from what I see in your pictures I think

Your a little out of practice no biggie.

    Not a Shielding Gas issue

Might be base metal or filler metal.

Do you have voids in the weld bead if you clean things up with a flap disc

Just what is this piece going to do?

That's kind of what it looks like to me. I'm welding up the bits for a new knee crank for my milling machine. This is me practicing so I don't totally embarrass myself as this one's for 'posterity!" (see the parts in this post)

You will need to beat on the handle with a 10 pound hammer Then break the mill side off.

Thanks that totally helped. Went down a size on filler rod. The “customer facing” welds came out the best! Phew!

    Nice!

You can tell the angle you had your cup based on the heat effected zone in the metal; that came out really good!

Turned the gas down to 13cfm, upped the tungsten to 1/8” and a #8 cup. Bigger rod for the outside corner. And throttled a little when I was adding rod.

if ya can't weld it pretty, grind it pretty...

    20221130_135811.jpg

Added a small gusset to the outside edge of the front and rear awning brackets. Hopefully it is enough to keep it from sagging. everything is 1/4 x 1" flat stock.

    20221130_085611.jpg

final install will have the awning pushed in closer to the tent, an I may consider bring a brace down to the bed bar to help support everything as well.
