Greased my drive shaft...

this may be accurate but what 4WD is getting at is that alot of people including myself use the same grease for all three and have never had a problem what so ever.

 

same for most Toyota dealerships.

 

all i know is i work on helicopters we have 14/28 day inspections as part of the inspection you grease every fitting on the head of the aircraft and you grease until it purges clean grease and inspect the old shit that comes out looking for water muds dirt and other comtaninants. thats how i grease mine and i do it every oil changes so every 3000 or 3 months i have upwards of 340,000 miles on all original parts including joints. and also autozone sells a grease needle for like 3 bucks. its like a hypodermic needle with a zerk on the end thats how i grease my ball joints and everything of that type it helps and is a good cheap investment. P.S. i drive my truck like i stole it everywere and no issues. i use the cheap walmart red grease. below is a link to what i am speaking of

How exactly does that needle get into the stock boots/bushings? Just stab it?

 

what i do is i have a paint pen i put a dot then i slowly push it through grease it till it purges then its good. next time i go to do it i go in the same dot and re paint it that way i go throught the same tiny tiny hole each time the rubber will close the hole back up with no issues. the only downside to doing this is that your pushing thich grease thru a needle thus it makes it a little hard to pump and it takes alot of pumping if they are dry

 

just because toyota didnt put a fitting on it doesnt mean it cant or shouldnt be greased

 

and then drive around, come home and grease all over the place.....don't worry. I do it every other oil change, red grease.

 

you can also slide the needle between the boot and shaft to keep from puncturing the boot

 

So where are the 8 on your 4x4? I counted six on my 4x4 too. both end ujoints on the drives shafts=4 and one each on each driveshaft flange=2.

4+2=6

Did you count the 2 for the double Cardan joints ? If not great , but if you don't have the serviceable cardan, I feel for you cause when it goes, its drive shaft time....

 

His shaft may have been serviced by the way, that may be why he deosnt have as many zerks, you can rebuild a shft, I did mine ( that stupid piece of shit shaft forever burned in my memory ), it was the biggest pain servicing my cardan shaft it acually ate the needle bearings on the cardan shaft and I found new needles to replace them what a bitch!( greasing until the old shit comes out is a must or you'll be buying / rebuilding yours.) My local machine shop has all the u joints for this shaft and rebalanced mine after I rebuilt it ( made a huge diff in vibrations ) my driveshaft took 6 hours to rebuild and 300.00 bucks hence the importance of greasing, grease you're shit or you'll be doing some cardio...

 

Do you mean the cardan going in to each front wheel? I thought those were CVs?

No, the double cardan joint is the 2 joints kinda knuckled together, just past the center bearing towards the rear diff, some were servicable & (pretty sure it was from 2000 -on) previous to 2000 from what I understand it was a perma seal-type bullshit which I can't stand, meaning when it was done , so were you & the recommendation was to replace the drive shaft, I could be wrong here on all counts !! (but I don't think so) mine has the double cardan but its servicable/greaseable with 2 zirks...

 

so i did the red grease in the universal zerks this weekend and the truck actually seems to run quieter. 10,500 k - 2011.

so where else do i squirt this stuff?

Question, i noticed when i was greasing during my last oil change (first, only owned the trucko a few months) that two of the zerks didn't appear to let any grease in, and instead of pushing grease out the 'normal' way, the grease pushed out around the zerk... i'm assuming this means new zerk fitting time. Are all zerks the same? if not, does someone have the part #? would i need to plumbers tape the threads? loctite? Thanks!

 

Not neccessarily, wipe those zerks off before attaching grease tube to zerk, push straight down on it till you "feel" it seat around the zerk, now pump, you weren't on it all the way...

 

did mine today for the first time...got all 8

took quite a bit in some joints before i saw new grease...old stuff was BLACK

gonna make sure i do it much more often...had the truck 10 months, first time doing it myself

 

Nice !!! good job & yeah I've seen alot of post here with guys having all these driveline noise/Ujoint failures issues (many on 2nd gens with lo miles) & it seemed to me that the mileage some said they had & the issues they were having also could only be one thing..... simple lack of maintenance/chassis lube/driveline lubing, I've got 166K on my truck, same U joints as far as I can tell. (ok, bought it with 94K on it already)

I've put on at least 70K , no driveline issues at all, I lube mine once a month, minimum, more during winter when we do alot of runs in rain/mud etc;.....
