Coming back from work today and noticed the fan only blows on high.

After some research, I pulled the fan resistor to check. Just getting "ol" reading (bridging pin 3 to all other pins) from the multimeter, so I assume its shot.

My 2013 is at 170K miles right now, and I've only owned the truck since 130K. So I can't say for sure if this has been replaced in the trucks life before, but even if it hasn't it annoys me that it failed at this mileage.

I would prefer to find an upgrade to the OEM, if one exists.

The resistor and plug have been updated to a square design along with different wire gauge. New Part numbers are listed in the pictures. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-2018-...RESISTOR-WITH-CONNECTOR-PIGTAIL-/323788974234

Connector to blower motor may have issue too.

. I would inspect any connection to and from the blower motor and replace what hassigns of overheating.

Will check out the ebay post, seems interesting. Did toyota change from the 4 pins in a line to the 4 in a square in a certain model year?

Is there a known problem with the fan power connectors? I didn't see any electrical damage to any of the pins upon inspection.

Not sure if its relevant, but there appears to be corrosion on the resistor card itself (not the pins).

It was updated a few years ago. Maybe when the 3rd gen models came out. U may find the older style resistors through online venders( napa /autozone). 2nd gens had an issue with the wiring/resistor running hot due to wire gauge and or lose connector plugs.

So this newer 4 pin in a square was introduced in 3rd gen but backwards compatible? The resistor (82141-04Q80) definitely looks beefier than the original.

Compatible yes. Splicing old 4 pin wires to accommodate newer squared design. Colors to and from plug will be different. They do not match up color for color. More information on the post from tnshooter

Got a new resistor, connector, and fan installed.

The splicing was a bit weird because there was 14 gauge wire being mated to 16 gauge wire. I wonder why Toyota made some wires smaller in the newer design.

Installed a new fan just in case it was wearing and causing additional amperage draw. It was the newest OEM version. There does seem to be an audible whine on M1 and M2 from the fan itself. But other than that, the ticking from the old fan has gone away.
