I just got some more info. He had a built 3rz in it originally, but the bottom end let go 5 years ago. So he put a 2rz in there with the "built" head. Going to look at it tomorrow morning, I'll get more photos and info.

 

Just got back from a week long trip in the desert. Truck did great as always.

 

Still sounds like a winner to build upon.

I'm one step closer to turboing the RAV4 now... 16 with 63k 4wd with icons all the way around... The wife may love it more than she does me... Just can't wait to get them bfg's replace and probably gonna relocate the oil filter since it's behind the skid plate and it's the junky cartridge one

 

I am pretty easy on the truck. It is exciting that it just wants to go. It is pretty high maintenance compared to a stock truck, but general prep has been good to me.

 

Alright, so the turbo taco is a bit of a project to say the least. I think I'm probably going to pass on it. The guy who originally built it, did so in order to drive from Maine to Michigan with a camper in the back, compete in a car and driver event, then drive back to Maine.

He successfully did this, but it means he set the truck up a bit weird. The coil springs on the rear struts are rubbing on the buckets, the top of the buckets have pipe thread nipples to mount the struts to. There's also bungee cords wrapped around the shock to act as a bump stop. The truck sits with a very forward rake to it, because he meant for it to have a camper in the back. Bottom of the frame has been plated from the rear dog leg to the front of the cab on both sides. It's got a fuel cell in the rear, the pump is mounted too high so it goes dry when under 1/4 tank. Also the fuel fill leaks water into the tank and it has for years. Needs all four calipers rebuilt or replaced, and four new tires.

It's got a non intercooled turbonetics turbo setup, t3/t4 hybrid pushing 11psi, 500cc injectors, "built" 3rz head with a cam package on a stock 2rz bottom end. SDS stand-alone, yard tuned to 11:1 afr at WOT, but "more rich" at idle and normal driving. He said he can see oil pushing out the back of the turbo on startup, but it only does it for a minute before sealing up, so I think the turbo is on its way to heaven.

Overall, I think it needs too much work and repair for me to take on with my current projects. It would be good for somebody just starting out on turbo projects, but I can't justify buying it when my other projects need the attention.

For the 1gr is there a drop in maf housing out there that works?

My buddy is making an custom intake because he has an engine cage. He bought this stupid housing and it is a pile. Fuel trims dance like hula girl.

Measure I.D. of stock one and get that size. Or buy the weld on flange and lathe up your own.

 

So I'm revisiting the idea of the turbo taco. Mainly to use the drivetrain and stand-alone to swap into my '76 midget. Anybody think that Supra rear end is worth anything? I'd either scrap it with the truck or pull it out and sell it.

My thought process here, is that I can get the truck for cheap enough to possibly make most of my money back selling interior parts and the Supra rear. And even if I don't, where else am I going to buy a running+driving turbo drivetrain with a stand-alone for under 2k? (We wiggled on price)

 

How capable is that standalone?

It's pretty low value items on that truck. If you have the time to do it right could be worth the time. Could get a good 300whp with some solid maintenance.

I've seen the guys at Roadkill have fun with worse. With some ingenuity, it'd be a blast, and definitely something that you weren't worried about being pristine.

 

Wondering if I should move my boost controller fitting closer to the butterfly on the charge pipe?

It's just aft of the impeller on the turbo housing now as circled in red so it us way downstream.

Thoughts?
