16" vs. 17"

On the fence about wheel size and tire options. Want skinny 33" tires. What do you guys think in terms of tire options?

 

255/85/16s are all mud terrains. Quite a few more AT options in 255/80/17 size. I’ve got wildpeaks AT in 255/80/17 and couldn’t be happier.

Also 17” tire options will be a bit lighter if that matters to you.

 

as long as you can clear brakes, I go smaller, I want more sidewall. That said, I think I've read (I don't have 17s, so I haven't researched for myself) that there are way more options in the 17" world.

 

Shorter sidewalls flex less which makes the steering feel sharper on the pavement.
Taller sidewalls flex more giving a more floaty feeling on the pavement.

 

I went with 16s and then realized how few options I had for an A/T tire. I am currently saving for a set of 17 rims and new tires. To get A/T tires I was happy with, I had to go with 235 85 16s toyo"s A/T 3s. If I was doing it all over again I would find the exact tire I wanted and buy the rims to fit. It didn't help that I found a pair of 2021 trd pro tacoma take off wheels for 200 bucks.

 

I like 16" for the taller sidewall. Makes the tire look bigger and protects the wheels more. But there are waaaaay more 17" tire sizes if you ever go away from tall skinnies.

I have stock 16s and bought a second set of take offs, I just buy take offs and put them on. It's cheaper, people buy these trucks and rip off the stock wheels left and right. I am conflicted for my next set - whether I look for sport take offs or not.

For everything I've done, the stock rubber has been enough for wheeling. Probably wouldn't be with the sport tires. That said, if I wanted to go with non-take-offs, 17s have a ton more options, so the sport takeoffs would set me up for those.

That's not to say that the options for 16s are slim. There's still a ton. There's just more for 17s.

 

well said, some 16” sizes have less options than the equivalent 17” option. When I’m ready for my next set of tires I will heavily consider going up to a 17” wheel unless additional tire options pop up in the 16” sizes.

 

I found 4Runner take offs for 255/80r17 Wildpeaks. The best 16” option is cooper ST Maxx, but they are heavy as hell and $200-300 more in the 16” vs 17” pizza cutters

 

Not all are MT, St Maxx are a fantastic tire and available in that size (that's what I've been using last two years). Definitely more options in 17, but I'll stick to 16 since that's what I have already

 

not necessarily.... 17in km2s were heavier than 255 85 r16 16in km2s.... which didnt make sense to me. I called BFG to confirm.

 

Interesting, how is that possible if there is literally less rubber. Hm
