I have a general question about engine swap and/or rebuild.

I blew my motor on my 2012 4.0 and I’m curious to know what is my cheapest route. Rebuild or swap? Pictures are what I have.

Also, I’ve been looking for 1gr-fe and a lot of what I find is 1gr-fe’s from 4Runners. Will that fit or would it be better if I stick to a motor that came out of a Tacoma with a similar year?

What do you mean when you say the engine is blown?

For the best compatability use an engine from a 2012-15 Tacoma, 05-11 4.0's didn't have the secondary air injection ports in the head that 2012-15's do.

some 4runners had dual vvti systems and I don't think those 4.0s are compatible with a tacoma, which had single vvti systems.

Correct, the gen5 (09-present I believe) 4runner 4.0l has dual VVT and will not work in the Tacoma and also the pre 06 4runner 4.0l will not work either as it has different cam sensors and a different cam reluctor wheel.

Always wondered why no one tried to get it the work, the dual vvti has more horse power.

You would need the PCM and engine harness from the donor for sure, and who knows what else to make it work.
Not sure why they didn't change the designation of the dual VVT version of the 4.0l (it's still designated as 1GR-FE), it has more in common with the 3.5l 2GR-FE that is in the front wheel drive platforms than it does with the 4.0l single VVT (also designated 1GR-FE) in the Tacoma.

Figured harness and ecm, but that's not a huge issue with a donor. With people out there doing v8 swaps would think a swap to another 4.0 would be easy.

Depends how harnesses and stuff mate up, if you gotta do alot of custom wiring or swap whole harnesses like the dash harness that can get to be not really worth it IMO but I suppose alot of different swaps are possible with enough time, determination, and knowledge.
Swapping different engines/transmissions is not my area I do like for like swaps, far less headaches that way.

The extra power isn’t worth it.
Those that want more power are looking for “more power”.

Forced induction is much easier than a swap.

Pretty sure you can drop an 05-11 engine in a 12-15.
But you meed 05-11 manifolds and a bypass kit for the SAIS.
