I got stuck in some ice/snow the other day and needed help getting out. I had 4x4 engaged and the dash light was on. I was pretty sure my 4x4 works ok, It has helped me get out of mud years ago and when I use it on dry pavement and turn tight the truck skips a bit (I make sure not to do this but I know it is a sign it is engaging.)
Anyways while I was stuck in the snow only my rear wheels would spin out, no spinning up front. Does this mean there is something wrong with my 4x4? Also, I believe I have the open differential, not limited slip differential.
    Thanks

If you have a jack and some jack stands you can lift all the tires off the ground and check. If not working check the vacuum lines.

How do you know the fronts weren't spinning? The front diff is open so if one wheel has less traction then the other, the one without traction will spin while the other doesn't move.

If you looked out from the seat and didn't see the driver wheel spinning the other one may have been, depending on how you were stuck.

I think Eon Blue mentioned my situation. It turns out the passenger hub wasn’t locked so I guess the open diff would send power there? It feels a bit better now. I’ll look into how to check vacuum lines I haven’t done that before.
