    Thanks. This is helpful.

I assume if I replace the head unit I will lose the apps I currently have with the JBL is that correct?

CarPlay is pretty overrated in my opinion. It's nice, it has its place, but most of the apps are fairly crippled, kinda slow, and have weird menus that require you to go through multiple steps to do simple things. They say they limit apps for 'safety' but you end up looking at the screen even more and getting frustrated with the multi-level menus. Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and even Maps are kind of wonky. GAIAgps is crippled and not very useful to me. I upgraded my 2019 to a Pioneer unit and I guess I'm glad I have it but I could easily live without it since I just end up using an iPad mini for GAIA anyway and half the time I just access my music/podcasts using the phone. I've modded the crap out of my Tacoma and I'd say this is my least favorite or least bang-for-the-buck mod (as it is quite expensive in the end).

Honestly, I gained so much with the new unit that I don't miss what it lost from the factory unit. Almost a year later I couldn't tell you what was lost...

Does that work with steering controls, backup camera etc? And what model did you buy? Thanks

The Maestro module will allow you to retain all steering controls and will also allow you to remap those buttons if wanted. Everything works. You have to get all the various wiring adapters to make it work. I can push a button on the front of the radio and it will activate the backup camera while driving. Just prepare yourself for the sticker shock of buying everything. Very much worth it if you plan on owning the truck for many years.

I will get the model# of the radio momentarily.

Hey guys piggy backing* on this post. I saw a JBL head unit from 2019 Tacoma and the seller says it has CarPlay. Interested in buying it cause it has the same harness and connections as my stock head unit.
Guess my question is does it really have CarPlay or is jsut saying that to get the sale.

link of the post: and another unit he is selling:

2019 Tacomas did not have Carplay. He told you it does? 2019 don't have the wiring harness setup to be able to install a factory unit from a later year. You would have to get a harness adapter from that autoharness place mentioned previously. I did the upgrade with a unit from a Sienna and it works great. I saved some money by buying a Sienna unit that didn't have Carplay but was a 3.0 Entune unit and I downloaded the factory upgrade for Carplay. Difference in price was $500 to $700

Do you know the part number or model years for the Sienna head unit that can receive the update?

86140-08100 Prices are all over the place. See one for $300. Another for $1100. Maybe the $1100 one is updated. Not sure. If you have OEM navigation and want to retain it then make sure it has the other "box" under the receiver "box" Sellers might be not state that the unit has Nav or not as the part # I put in this post is the part # for the receiver part only BUT, as I said, sellers might not know there is a separate Nav unit with a separate part #. The best way is to just look at a picture from the back and you can clearly see the larger "box" on top and smaller "box" underneath.

This one is the cheapest I've seen with no nav. I bought mine from a carparts.com type place which is essentially a junkyard online
