I'm doing an oil change, and I'm hitting the torque limit well before the oil filter housing is seated properly - there's a gap between the housing and the engine rims. Any thoughts on why, and should i just continue to tighten? I fear cracking the housing.

    Thanks in advance.

This scenario typically only happens when threads are crossed. Did it thread in straight? Pull it back off and look at the plastic threads for damage or cross threading.

Don't force it, use your better judgment. Remove and ensure you have all o-rings/seals properly seated (or have them at all).

The two flanges do not need to meet to make the seal. The o-ring is for that. So long as you aren’t cross threaded, and it doesn’t seem you are, you are likely all set.

Better a little panick than buying a new housing, I will do my first change eventually. I’m sure I’ll twist with a tad bit of paranoia, but I won’t torque it to 70lbs like the dealership oil jockeys lol!!

I think those goons use a 3 foot breaker bar to install the canister, lol.

I've been recommended to spray the threads of the composite filter housing with heavy duty silicon before installing so it threads on smoothly, which it did. Make sure the o ring is installed in the right place. If your using a proper wrench like the latest motivx one you shouldn't have an issue cracking it. I'd find out first why its binding.

it will feel like it is binding if no lubricant applied to the threads and try and install it dry.
