I took delivery of my Tacoma on 2/7. This would be my third Toyota truck that I have owned and driven. I had a 85 FJ60 LandCruiser my father bought new from 90 to 94. Expensive, heavy on the gas and pretty much reliable once I put a second motor into it and ran it without all the emission controls. Then in 94, I traded the LC in for a new toy pickup, a 2x4, standard cab, 22RE w/five speed and only got 217k and 12 good years out of it, until the body was beat and the transmission started popping out of gear. Then 50 months with a Dodge Ram 1/2ton shortbed, V6, 6 speed, two wheel drive, bought new. Inexpensive and underpowered with a miserable 3.21 open rear differential. Fantastic for driving around Texas, awful in the snow and hills.

Traded the Dodge in for a 2011 Tacoma Access cab, ultra white, 4x4, SR5 trim, V6, six speed. Now I get run down the interstate and NOT have to downshift for speedbumps.

Things I like about the truck: rear view camera is a neat toy, might save a backing ding one day. Gas mileage is worse than the Dodge, at around 18 mpg. Traction is great with the four wheel drive and the fancy electronics operating various brakes, but the stock Dunlop tires are pretty awful for gravel, mud and snow. I live off a dirt road, off a dirt road, off a steep, winding, county mountain road. I have already got 17x8 rims for my studded snow tires, they should fit with a 1/4” spacer for the front brake caliper. Summit was the cheapest with $320 for rims and center caps delivered to my front door. Crager powder coat black, rock crawler style.

What annoys me, are the $300 floor mats the dealer had as part of the package, and I am not sure about the bed tie down systems. I like hooks in the corners for securing motorcycles.

Last week I bought a case of NAPA 3148 oil filters that will fit this and the wife’s Wrangler Sahara, the FRAM 3614 filters have gotten way to cheap to use, and I am still thinking about an early oil change to 5w-30 at 1,000 miles and get rid of the 0w-20. I value lubrication over .0001 additional miles per gallon.

As I get older, the trucks get modded less. The Land Cruiser had headers, weber carb, custom pipe bumpers, 15x8 wheels and 31x10.5-15 flotation tires…and an used engine, not US spec, from Spectre Off Road. The 94 Toy pickup got a custom back bumper, sliding rear glass and a variety of seat covers, plus white spoke wheels and Michelin X-One tires. The 07 Dodge Ram got a trailer hitch, front toe hooks and floor matts. This truck is getting snow tires on steel wheels. I am even trying to keep my other 4x4, a 62 Dodge Military Power wagon, stock…still has the 900x16 original tire size, but in heavy lugged grip spur tires.

Hopefully, I will get the same good service out of this truck as I did the 94…

Welcome...My only suggestion is to use the Toyota filters...They are only 3.99 each.

A little of this and a little of that.
Nice write up Howard. Like others have requested, pictures please, especially of the Power Wagon.
    Enjoy the new truck.

I need to get a digital camera...shooting with the old 4x5 view camera for internet use is a trifle clumsy...luckily the wife believes in digital.

OK, here is one of the Military Power Wagon in the snow, and here is one of the dogs driving the 68 Dodge pickup. Finally, here is one of my little backyard hobby shop last spring, with the 62 Dodge Town Wagon parked on the party porch.
