I think you have received a lot of good advice. Here are two other thoughts for you.

Thought 1: I love the look and capabilities of the 2022 Nissan Frontier and seriously considered it before deciding on a Tacoma 2022 TRD Off Road. A deciding factor for me was that my wife owned a Nissan Juke for a few years and we both found the build quality lacking. That experience plus the fact that the new Frontier is only in its first model year were major deciding factors

Thought 2: Do a financial assessment of what it would cost you to buy a Toyota and what you could make from your Nissan. Surely it will be expensive, so consider carefully if any benefits you get from switching to a Toyota are really worth that price.

My Nissan is paid for and I would pay cash for the difference between the two trucks. Having said that, I would expect the trade to cost me 10k. I know that the financially smart thing to do would be to keep the Frontier and use the 10k to to fix stuff as it breaks, then trade it in a few years. The other side is more of an emotional thing, feeling good about the truck, hopefully spending less time at the service department having things fixed and not worrying that the truck will strand me if I take a long road trip. I'd also get some additional features and better off-road abilities.

My wife tells me that I study things to death (and of course she is right), but to me it is fun researching things like this.

One thing I'd advise you to study (to death) is the local shop/service center you would use for each. If the Toyota place is run by idiots and the Nissan one is full of MENSA peeps, you know which one will have a better experience. If you do your own work, I'd personally go for the Taco. I weighed the same trucks against each other when I was planning to downsize from my Tundra, and opted for the Taco. I dig the Frontier, but I felt there was more value in the Tacoma when shopping the top trims.

Test drive on the highway. I'm sure the Nissan is a better highway driver.

Absolutely it is. 9 gears plus more power. I would be shocked if it wasn't. Get off pavement though, and it's a different story.

This is one of the videos I used to help me decide, and I have it at the timestamp of a fun part if nobody wants to watch the whole thing. It's a long video, but it's good info.

There are not alot of midsize truck buyers going off road. Yes the Tacoma does better off road. I'd like to see how the Ranger Raptor does off road compared to the 3rd gen Tacoma.

I expect the 4th gen Tacoma to be the least off road worthy Tacoma to ever be built by Toyota.

A hybrid engine is an unnecessary complication in an off road setting.

Percentagewise, sure not a ton of them off road. Heck, I don't off road a ton, but I do enough on crappy roads that it is up a bit on my priority list. As for the Ranger Raptor, who knows. If they push it the direction of the f150 Raptor then it'll be a great dune truck for fast whoops and such, but less awesome for more crawler type stuff.

100% agree with the 4th gen not being likely to have major off road chops. Regulations are killing that ability from the factory.

I had an Xterra for 12 years. My experience is that Nissan is expensive in every direction. 100% happy w/ my Tacoma purchase.

This video compares a PRO vs a pro4x when a pro4x should really be compared to a OR.

It was useful to me as I was shopping the Pro and the Pro4x. The comparison in the video isn't based on price, but rather the fact that both are the pinnacle of each truck's off road abilities. I get that the Pro is more expensive and more capable, but the TRD OR would still beat the Pro4x off road. The only advantages the Pro has over the OR is slightly better approach and departure angles and a little more squish in the suspension. All the other tools are on the OR, and it would outperform the Pro4x in the dirt the same way the Pro did.

Still deciding which taco to order
yes ,i was really considering getting one till i learned it was GDI so went with the tacoma(port injection, timing chain, noninterferance, hydraulic lifters)also my 2022 is late in the generation so i figured most all bugs would be worked out still think those frontiers are cool though but i have 0 regrets

    This!
Manual transmissions are WAY more FUN to drive!
Wouldn't even consider an automatic when buying a truck, so options were limited when we got the 2020.

Eh, I don't think it's assuming money is an issue for OP. It's just not a financially smart decision regardless. I'd at least wait a couple years until the warranty is up and the used car market isn't in fantasy land to make the switch.

I was very frustrated in my Tacoma search and test drove and was oh so close to a Pro4x then I read this exact thing and since this my last truck for awhile I became concerned about long term on the Nissan engine. To be fair the Nissan did feel smoother and seems to have better drive train all around , yet here I am !
