A guy who is against expansion has negative thoughts on expansion. In other news: water is wet.

The thought that regular season games don't matter is weak at best. The majority of fans of, say, Boise State, couldn't give 2 less shits about what Michigan State is doing. The "die hards" you're referring to are more the "casual fan." The real die-hards are the ones keeping tabs on teams that aren't their own or in their conference. Michigan/Ohio State is always going to have value, especially provided both teams are relavent. Alabama/Auburn will always have value. Furthermore, why do losses matter? Because there are 120+ teams and only 12 make it. Because it still affects your seeding and chances. Top 4 get bye weeks, on top of potentially being knocked out by teams with higher qualifications. The argument about teams losing 1/4 of their games (3) is weak as well, especially considering the NFL doesn't bat an eye at that. Hell, one year we even had a playoff team that finished below .500. Literally every other sport has a proper playoff, including Division II and III football. Hell, even college hockey, with far fewer teams, has a proper playoff. This isn't 1940. Expanded playoff is long overdue. Time for teams to put up or shut up and not rely solely on the opinions of a group of individuals who say you're the best and these two teams should play.

If you're concerned about players sitting out, there's a few things to keep in mind (nevermind that that is already happening). Only the best 2% of players from college football ever make it to the NFL. Some NIL structures are even set up so that some players would make more by remaining in school instead of going to the NFL early. Furthermore, it is in its infancy as well as NIL. Rules or NIL structures could easily be put in place to address that issue. Such as opting in or out only taking place to start the playoff and not being allowed to enter back in later. Or NIL stipulations, etc.

What's for certain is that college football is evolving and it is long overdue. Some people will continue to whine and complain about it for years to come, but fact is this is WAY better than the BCS was or the AP was or even a 4-team playoff is.

only 12 teams make it. You don’t think it’s gonna be the big name teams? Bama with 2 losses will get in over a G5 team with 1 loss. Ohio state and Norte dame will pretty much always get in with any record.

College football isn’t the NFL. Like he said in the video: college football is a regular season sport. It has never been a post season sport. And it shouldn’t be. That’s part of what makes college football great. “Try to convince someone that there’s a must-see game in college football now. They can lose one more. They can lose 2 more. They'll be fine”. Regular season games just aren’t as important with 12 teams :notsure:

Maybe all these athletes that sit on the sidelines every single game, yet have their entire college tuition and arguably much more (legal or not) paid for can get some play time now :notsure:

I like the idea of chess, over checkers. It could be a new dynamic picking which players to showcase or save, per game, and I think having to prepare offensively and defensively for teams who may be able to put out 2 very different but equally effective QB's for example, makes the entire game more competitive and strategic. This is a TEAM sport by the way.

lol to your statement water is wet. I went back to rewatch the video and yeah i get that. I did like how he was trying to see it from the players perspective, and what "supposedly" some players were saying off the record.

is the current system better than the bcs or AP. I would agree yes. I was and still am a fan of expanding the playoffs, however I believe 8 would be better, but I dont get paid big money for my thoughts on that. At the end of the day I believe every game counts and will continue to count. We can debate forever about how they do or don't matter as much but at the end you don't want a lose that could have and should have been a win hold you out of the playoffs or a first round bye, or even home field advantage ( however that will be decided?) Football is a season team sport. A team should be growing through out the season and some times the best or better teams at the end of the season are currently left out because of a slip up towards the beginning of the season. Now we can see those teams put their agruements to action and play to see if they deserve a chance at raising the big trophy at the end.

You stated some NIL deals are structured to keep the players in school verses leaving school early to go pro, which I think is great, and building stipulations like that into NIL deals will become more common and I'm sure including not opting out of post season games will (if not already) be included in some deals if not most.

there are so many different arguents that can made for or against these changes, and I understand. I also understand the game has changed and will continue to do so. I've been a college football fan my entire life and I don't see that changing. come 2024 I will simply kick back with my feet up and watch more games in the post season than I can now. For better or worse I will be rooting on my Dawgs!

I never said it wouldn't be the big name teams. But only if they prove their worth. OSU, Alabama, and Clemson would all be in, as would Tennessee if it happened this year. Notre Dame would not be. The format is set for the 6 highest ranked conference champions (ND does not qualify) and 6 at-large bids (ND does not qualify this year).

You're right, college football isn't the NFL. But what makes it great has little to nothing to do with how teams are treated for the championship and much more to do with the dedication and team atmosphere you cannot find in overpaid NFL players. College football has never been a postseason sport because it has never had a postseason. Just a bunch of meaningless bowl games that don't lead to anything and a couple of objectively chosen teams playing for the championship because someone told them they're the best. You still have players opting out and you still have games no one watches. This gives more games with actual substance and something to fight for down the stretch. All teams strive to be the best so getting losses isn't going to suddenly become any more of an issue than it has been. The only difference now is you can still prove you're one of the best while not being completely perfect, especially late in the season. Right now, lose week 1 and there's lots of time to make it up. Lose week 12 and it's pretty detrimental. How is that better? Saying regular season games are meaningless now is just plain asinine. Again, there's reward to bring one of the best 12, and even more reward to being in the top 4. Plus, now you can market bowl games that have meaning and still say your team was the X bowl champions despite not winning the championship instead of looking at the Fiesta or Rose Bowl like a consolation prize.

Amen to that. Personally, I expected 8 and was very happy to see 12. I could see one more expansion in the future, but I'm certainly not complaining for now. Much like I loved the 4-team playoff when it was new because it was better than "here's the two teams that are going to play for the national championship. Fuck everyone else."

I love college football far more than the NFL (I mean, it does help that my teams are Michigan and the Lions lol). I'm very excited for the new format and can't wait to see what happens, especially after we have a year or two of it under our belts.

Yep. Which is why OSU and ND and the big name teams will all make up the 12 spots aside from the 1 G5 champ.

This is the issue. Traditional college football is dead. Done. Kaput. Over.

ESPN drove a stake in it's heart. Love it or hate it, it's a new paradigm. There's no putting the cork back in the bottle.

NIL is gonna change it for the worse. And my question from the outset is if the college players get big bux from NIL, do they still get free tuition???

This PAC12 title game would have 0 national interest with a 12 team playoff.

I don't think the post you quoted even mentions Saban. Kinda a weird tangent to go on, randomly. You have something you'd like to tell us? It's safe here, buddy.

The NCAA still has a huge amount of control over who plays in the final game. The refs always see what they wanna see...

I'm interested to see if the SEC ultimately will be happy it got what it wished and schemed for. Can a school like GA or AL find the boosters and advertisers to pay their players and coaches as much as USC or UCLA can? TX may be the only SEC school that can compete financially. FL maybe?

They seem to be doing just fine thus far.

    2023 recruiting ranking so far:
    1. Alabama
    2 Georgia
    5. LSU
    8. Florida
    11. Tennessee.
