Sorry if this has been asked before I used the search feature and couldn't find anything, Anyway I have a 2017 TRD Off Road is there anyway I can get Android CarPlay with the stock head unit with some kind of upgrade or anything? My wife and I just had it in a rental car and LOVED IT!!! Thanks ahead of time for both the real and smart ass answers.

No there isn’t without a lot of money into a new headunit and probably a new usb connection.

    You have four options:

    1. Swap your head unit for an aftermarket one with CarPlay support

    2. Retrofit your (entune 2.0) head unit with a (entune 3.0) head unit from a 2020-2022 Tacoma

    3. Retrofit your (entune 2.0) head unit with a (entune 3.0) head unit from a 2018+ Sienna (often less expensive and easier to find…)

    4. Add CarPlay support via the pass thru BeatSonic system

    Here’s a retrofit that I did with a 2022 head unit in a 2019 truck (option 2 above):

    @IcemanPNW
Do you happen to know what is lost OEM Feature-wise with each replacement option?

    1. Depends on whatever aftermarket unit you get

    2. The color scheme doesn’t match the dash colors scheme, and the eco app doesn’t track mpg beyond the current trip. So far as I can tell everything else works like stock.

    3. Probably the same as 2, but not sure. I tested it in my truck for a week just to see if it was possible and it seemed fine. I think a couple of other guys on here have done it too.

    4. You keep all of the OEM features, you just don’t get a very clean CarPlay integration because the add on uses the pass thru.

I'm interested in option 3, but am really worried about incompatibility and lost features. As I never use the eco app, that's no loss in my mind.

There’s a handful of members that have done it, I’d reach out to them and see how it’s going. Search Sienna on the forums, many of the hits are relevant to this; here’s one posting about it yesterday:

Thanks for this info. I did some searches earlier today and it looks like I'm even more problematic as I have a JBL system.

Is there any downsides to doing option 2? Will there be any features you lose out on compared to having bought a 2020 truck and having it installed from the factory?

You mean if you pull a head unit from a 2020+ and put it into a 2016-2019, what features from the 2020+ won’t work?

That’s an interesting question that I hadn’t thought about as much… Since I only have a 2019 I’m not entirely sure.

A couple of things off the top of my head are the 360 cameras and the telematics (stuff like in vehicle wifi and app based remote start).
