5.29 nitro gears on 265/75/16 tires?!?!?

Ive had that setup for a year. Went to 255/85. Thinking of going back 265/75

Thanks! Yea I couldn’t bring myself to do a cab mount chop so I’ve stuck to this tire size. My truck keeps getting heavier so I needed the gear change. Driving fully loaded feels fine now!

How do you like 255/85? I’ve been considering that...

 

I have the KM3s and theyre great the first 20k miles then they become noisy even with rotations every 5k mi. 255/85 dont come in AT tires thats why Im thinking of going back to 265/75 or maybe 255/80r17 if I can get myself to buy new 17" wheels.
even at 80mph with the 5.29s its not so bad for short distances.

So for you its the tire options, not the tire size that you don’t care for? Same boat here, I wanted 255 Wildpeak’s on my otherwise stock OR, but would have to add the expense of changing over to 17” rims to go with it - that and the hire cost for the same tire makes it a hard pill to swallow.

 

yes. id like to stay on 16 for a bigger sidewall and wish the 255s came in AT. The KM3s are a monster offroad and Ive seen rigs on AT slide while mine on KM3s didnt. Yah if AT3Ws came in that size that would be the winner there!

 

Excellent video. How are you liking the truck’s behavior now that some time has passed? Especially in the 6th gear 65-80 MPH range with and without cruise.

Are you still feeling like it’s driving “over revved” at 70+ speeds? A 4.88 would only be 150-225 rpm lower in that mph range, but do you feel like that would be a better choice for a KD tuned truck on 265/75R16 SL with 150 lbs constant in bed?

I’d value your input on this topic to help me decide which ratio to go with. I already know I’ll like either one, so I’m mostly trying to decide which ratio based on the freeway and backcountry highway road trips we take most often where the truck is “struggling”. Seems like 4.88 would be better for freeway cruise control use and 5.29 would be better for backcountry mountain pass roads. I’d say I do a 50/50 split here.

So with my tires on the video the truck feels good cruising 70-75 mph. 80+ feels like the rpm is a little high. So it sorta depends on what speed you like to drive on the freeway at.

since the video I have upgraded to 33 inch tires and got a KDmax tune. It now likes 75-80 mph better.

honestly I say go with the 5.29 and then you’re set if you ever want to upgrade your tires in the future to bigger ones. Also crawling off-road with 5.29’s and 31.5 inch tires was amazing with all that torque… I kind of miss it haha

If you’re comfortable with cursing at 75 mph then you’ll be fine. If you like doing 80-85 mph on the freeway then maybe not…

It’s super torquey with small wheels! As long as you don’t like going 85mph you’ll love it

@Sapnjack are you currently running 5.29 on stock?

 

i initially ran them on the 265/75r16 which are an inch taller than stock. I’m running 285/75r16 now though. The bigger tire is a better match for sure, but I didn’t mind the 5.29 with the smaller tire. But ya it was super torquey with the smaller tire.

 

Same here,run first with 265/75/16 no bad,then change to 285/70/17.
