4th Gen Tacoma (2024+)

I already have a level 2 charger at my house. I've owned two electric cars. (still own one now)

It's cool dude. This is why I like it, not why you should.

 

How long ago did you buy that first house? How much were cars at the same time?

 

First house purchased 1978, 8 Sailors were living in it. Opened up the back windows and threw all the trash and crap out the back into the yard. I was a new teacher bringing home
$750 a month, house payment was $350. I could only afford used cars, rode a motorcycle to work for a year. My used VW caught fire and burned on the freeway, couldn't afford Insurance so that was a total loss. Found a used Ford Galaxy 500 with one side caved in from an accident. It had snow tires on it, (I live in San Diego, Ca.) Transmission leaked so much oil there was a trail of oil in the street from my driveway down the street towards my work. Ah, the good old days....being poor builds character!

 

My wife has a PHEV and it's the nicest vehicle we've had all while being the most pleasant to drive and live with. For ordinary tasks like running errands or commuting, it doesn't burn a drop of gasoline. EV range is roughly 30 miles. For longer trips, it runs like a normal hybrid, and when you get after it, it really moves. 0-60 in the 4's. Not bad for a grocery getter. Last long trip we took, I was scooting along averaging around 80 +/- and the overall mpg for that trip was 30. Again- not bad for an AWD SUV.

It's quiet, which makes it pleasant. It's luxurious. It's fast. $7500 tax credit. And when we're running EV only, we've figured that it costs about 1/3 of what gas costs. When you factor in the tax credit, it was less expensive than the gas equivalent, AND faster.

I'd like my next truck to be EV or PHEV, and my wife loves the EV function of her car so much that her next vehicle will likely be an EV.

I understand that there are a lot of naysayers out there, but a lot of those opinions have been based on misinformation and/or ignorance. If folks don't want to buy an EV, that's fine.

 

How much is that house worth today? It sure does.

 

We purchased a Polestar 2 a few months ago and it quickly went to the top of my favorite-vehicles-owned list. During the test drive I go "man we should get two of these".

For typical daily driving with some spirited fun mixed in, EV's are really awesome. Just nauseatingly quick. I've owned things like a 2017 GT350, and although you can't beat the sound and visceral feeling of that kind of V8, it's easy to forget about it when you press the accelerator on the Polestar 2. It's just bonkers and really impossible to put into words without experiencing it first-hand.

For the type of driving we do, I haven't had to charge it off of anything but a standard 110V, 15A outlet, so no real cost adder for a charger for our use case.

Certainly isn't for everyone's lifestyles, but there's definitely a lot of people that dog on EVs without actually experiencing them or because they think all cars should still have carburetors and run on leaded fuel for *reasons*.

Having that kind of instantaneous torque from a PHEV version while towing our little travel trailer in a truck the size of my Tacoma would be super awesome.

 

Completely agree. Some people are just afraid of new things, and make up *reasons*... as you pointed out.

Funny you mention wanting to buy 2 of them- the car I wrote about is a '22 Audi Q5e... and to cut a long story short we can buy a loaded '23. (usually there's a long wait for them). It has crossed my mind to buy the '23 for myself... but I'm getting a new Tacoma next month and we're trying to build a house- so it doesn't make sense to blow another load of money on something we don't *need*. As I've posted here before, I am hoping to trade my '23 TRD Pro on a PHEV or EV pickup in '24 or '25.

 

The house I purchased in the mid-late 70's for $42,500 is now worth about at least $500k. Great old house, oak floors, huge backyard, lot's of natural lighting in the living room.
Best part was having a neighbor with a keg dispenser in his garage and he left the door up. I'd head over there when I was "dry" with my plastic pitcher and help myself. (Schiltz beer)

That's kinda my point here. Things cost a lot more now than they used to. that's all. Lol.

 

Drove by the local 'Yota dealer today. The lots were 75% full. This dealer's lots had been BARE (and I mean bare) since early Covid.

Are you confident that they are not full of used vehicles?

 

If the 4th Gen is in fact debuting for MY2024, then that will make 2nd Gen the longest running generation!

I’m not looking forward to a turbo solution for the 4th G.

Turbos are for the most part exiting to drive and trouble free. But if and when trouble comes, it’s going to put a dent in the finance dept. In other words, it’s going to hurt. Something that’s not a threat from our current model version.

Even with recommended maintenance, a turbo’s life expectancy is about half (100-150k miles) of our current engines. I’d get a little more with my 5k mile oil changes (grinning).

Outside the maintenance issues, other reasons for shorter turbo life are poor driving habits that can result in turbo failure. So you should also consider these causes:
◦ Prolonged engine idling can create a vacuum with the turbine
◦ Hard acceleration from cold will not give the oil time to circulate, causing oil starvation to the turbo and engine bearings.
◦ Hot engine shutdown can cause carbon build-up in the turbo, leading to bearing failure.
I’m fairly sure a turbo model will come, I’m just hoping for a non turbo offering such as the Sienna drivetrain, tuned for the taco.

And I still don’t get the short life span TOYOTA has given the 3rd gen taco, when compared with the current T4R which introduced in 2009 as a 2010 model, and is still going.

It leaves me wondering what is so broken that it needs immediate attention.

 

Do we have hard, irrefutable confirmation that 2023 is the final year for Gen 3?

 

I can’t imagine a 6 speed autotragic and key’d start in 2024. The modern equivalent of riding a horse to work

 

why do people think failing turbos is a big deal? they can be rebuilt for a few hundred bucks. or better yet upgraded for a little more
