Who’s got two pups or more than two and what’s your experience with having multiple?

My fiancé and I have one GSP who’s about 1.5 years now and we are toying with the idea of having another dog in the next few months. We love having a dog and figured two might not be an awful lot more work (maybe we are idiots) but wanted some real world insight.

    Thanks!

I've had up to 4 at once, all different breeds, never a dull moment. Lab mix, Min Pin, Corgi, Beagle. Each with their own personality, the Corgi kind of kept to herself and was the queen of the couch. The rest were hooligans. Two is rarely a bad idea, they will keep each other company.

I've had two at once. Both male. They never did get along well by themselves. They would need to be crated or take one, leave the other. Otherwise, there was likely to be a fight. Even in the truck, the possibility of a fight was always present.
Shep/Husky mix and a Lab. Would not do that again without better info. Male/female is a safe bet but could also be a problem.

I sure hope that's not cat litter. Eat enough and it turns into rock in the gut.

My thoughts exactly. Would be a companion to one another and may entertain each other to some degree.

We have a female now so it wouldn’t be two males. Could be a male and female but more likely to have two females. Both would be GSP (shorthair pointer).

I've had two pups for the last 16 1/2 years - except for when one died and I was looking for another one. Have only had females and the first pair were great friends and played constantly. Lost one and the next doggo - they got along, but were never besties. Current set gets along, working on their relationship (have only had the younger one for 2 months). There was at least a 5 year age difference (current doggos are 10 years apart)

We have two JRTs, one is nearing 3 years old, the other is six months. Prior to adopting the puppy, the older dog was a handful, as all JRTs can be (he isn't our first one, so we accepted and were prepared for it). Required a lot of input and attention, had terrible separation anxiety whenever my wife (whom he had bonded to) left the house. He was not thrilled when we added the puppy, but he's warmed up to her. She has banished him from the master bedroom, he keeps her off the couch. It's comical, the territories they've each carved out. We were skeptical of the "they'll keep each other occupied" thing people had told us, but it's turned out to be true. They do entertain and exercise each other. The flip side of that, though, is when one decides to engage in mischief, the other tends to join in, so there's a bigger mess than you might get with only one. ;) My wife is agitating for a third now. :\

    Yeah.
We've had as many as 5 at a time, but seems like we've always had more than one. At the beginning of the pandemic, we had 3 Brussels Griffons (2 male, 1 female) and 2 Shiba Inus (1 male, 1 female). Still, that's less than 100 lbs. of dogs total, so not a huge food bill and poop-scooping duty wasn't terrible. Two of the Brussels have since passed (old age), and the 3rd is getting up there and is mostly a lap dog.

They get along for the most part and entertain each other. The Shibas do somewhat have their territories in the house, and the younger female sometimes goes off on the male if he's got something she believes belongs to her, but they are playful and funny for the most part. I think it would be hard to only have one at a time, at least for us.

Awesome input from everyone in the thread, much appreciated.

I think we want to do it but are just hesitant; which to me is a healthy thing to have since it’s a big commitment. We are young and have no children (that I know of :D) so I think the timing make sense. We recently bought a home with 14 acres so they have the space and we have the time. It will be a 2 year gap which feels good too.

we're planning on getting a 2nd in the near future. Aiming for another girl, but depending on the litter, we may get a boy.

Thanks, she is "Little Unko". In Japanese "Unko" means turd. (Because of the color) She sat garaged for 11 years, took me a year to get her running.
