I am still looking at used Tacomas. I see one listed that had the Valve cover gasket and Timing cover seals replaced at 70k miles. Is that common in these?

It does happen, probably one in a couple hundred. Haven’t revealed anything newer than a 2019 though.

As long as the block is dry the repair has no real bearing on the value of the truck. If anything you’re better off now that it’s been re sealed.

Earlier years, some16's/17's had timing chain cover leaks. Do to, not properly applied sealent to the cover.

Not really common but does happen in all years. There’s a thread on it. If it was replaced then it’s good to go. Make sure to have it on a lift and inspect meticulously the underside for any type of leaks. Focus also on passenger side near the firewall. That’s where the dreaded coolant leak occurs. Expensive repair.

Unrelated, given the inflated used market you probably could get a new truck for the same price or a little more. You’d also have the piece of mind of knowing it hasn’t been abused. Just a thought. I’ve seen some tacos with over 100k going for 35. New ORS are around 40.

I have for sure looked at new. I just can't get there financially. Or at least I did not see any new OR's for 40. All were 43 plus. Then come with higher taxes etc... But yeah that would be nice.

Dang, well there’s nothing wrong with a SR or SR5. I’d rather have a new SR than a used OR with 70k on it but that’s just me. Take your time because there are signs in some areas the market is starting to adjust. Good luck man!

So yeah, I am including SR5's in the search now. Saw one this morning at a good price and it was gone by this afternoon. LOL. Looks like I can get a SR5 and add the locker later and get better mileage. Still not as good as I thought. I did price out a new SR5 but unfortunately, it was just a bit out of my range as well. Looks like I am really needing to stay 35 or below and that is it. No stretch beyond that.

Good luck. I hope you can find one. I found a unicorn in 2021, a 2021 model OR 4wd with 3K miles and zero options in the color I wanted. $40K. So, keep looking.

Just dropped mine off at the dealer today for the leaky timing cover repair...2016 OR, started leaking a year ago at about 53k miles and finally fixing it now. It was getting pretty bad, making a mess out of things. There are a few threads about it on here

oh, ok. So common enough for a thread then. Surprising. I mean that is the crap I went through nonstop with my Rover. It was a beast off-road but broke my heart one too many times.

Don’t forget to figure total cost. If the budget is that strict that you have to stay under $35k, it’s likely you’re financing. A new vehicle will have fewer maintenance costs for the first several years (and has free maintenance included) and will usually get a better financing rate. A new double cab 4x4 SR5 at $37k might have a lower total cost than a used off road at $35k when all things are considered.

yeah it's a bit of a pain for sure, but I haven't had any other issues with the truck since I bought it new, knock on wood.... but at least you'd be getting one that has already had it fixed!

From what I've read the timing cover leak is more common on the 2GR-FE.
