I've never been maxed at 80. None of the previous tunes I had unlocked the top speed as far as I recall and no issues driving 80+ in Montana or Wyoming.

I hit 83 on stock tires and 5.29s. That was around 3k rpms so I would think I could have kept going. Opted not to since the gears start whining above 73. On 35s I could easily hit 95 based on this info (real speed not Spedo)

Hi all, definitely some great info and advice in this thread! I was hoping to get some guidance as a newbie on what it would take to regear my 3rd gen for 5.29s from East Coast Gear Supply? (Plan to run AT 35's eventually!)

I'd like to get the preassembled 5.29 clamshells they do but uncertain on what exactly to get? A local shop recommended them for the preassembled clams and they are specialized in Yota installs.

I have the stock rear E-locker and would like to add a front eaton along with the full 5.29 regear? Please and thanks!

These arrived today. Not installing until spring time but they were in stock and on sale for Black Friday. Had to pull the trigger. Now I have to keep an eye out for an Eaton for a good price. Will drop them off for REM and Cryo when I have time after the holidays.

It's a good idea to call ECGS and speak to them directly. They will walk you through the process, they are not pushy and will give advice on which direction to go. They are a reputable shop with a long history. I have the clamshell installs from ECGS front and rear on my YT channel so you can see the process if you'd like. Its not terrible, the front diff is more complicated/ time consuming but nothing ridiculous. Rear diff is maybe a 2-3 hour job the first time you take it off.

I've heard nothing but good things from ECGS. I will definitely give them a ring. Plan to take it to a shop to have them installed.

all this information has been great to read. I don't know if info has been shared about 4.88 and 5.29 on 255/85...or other skinner larger tires. thanks

The tire's outside diameter and weight will be the biggest contributing factors. Given that nearly all 255/85/16 tires only come in e-load ratings there will be virtually no difference from going 285/75/16 since OD and weight are similar.

I'm sure the answer to this question is here or somewhere else but I have read and read and have not found the answer...

My reference point is my 2006 MT Taco with 4.56 gears and 255/85R16 tires. On the 2006 Taco, my speedometer was always over indicating my true velocity by about 10%. So that if the speedo said 77mph, I was really only doing 70mph. I thought this was good since it meant more torque to the larger tires than stock.

I just put 5.29 gears on my 2022 AT Taco with the same 255/85R16 tires. I expected performance similar to the 2006 Taco but the result is the opposite. When the speedo says 70mph, I'm actually doing 77mph. So the 5.29s are not over compensating for the larger tires on the 2022 AT like the 4.56 gears did on the 2006 MT. Are the 5.29s really under geared for 33" tires (compared to my 2006 Taco) or is the speedometer getting data from GPS or just not calibrated the same but not reflecting the real change in gear ratio relative to the diameter of the tires?

Speedo is generated off of the wheel sensors, gearing does not affect the speedo. Your Speedo should be reading as such due to the tires and nothing else.

You should have felt the extra torque the first time you hit the gas at a stand still. And you should see your rpms stay above 2000 over 60mph. Basically you should see 6th gear at something like 50mph

Imo easiest way to tell is put it in 4lo and let it idle. You can go way slower than you could before. For me it was obvious on 35s

I totally appreciate the improvement over the stock gears with my 33" tires. I'm not questioning that the 5.29 gears work better than the stock gears with my 33" tires. But I expected the speedometer to read much faster than I'm actually going (like on my 2006) and it reads slower instead. I'm trying to figure out if this is some quirk of the electronics of the 3rd gen Tacoma, or are the 5.29 gears with 33" tires actually still a longer gear ratio than stock gears on stock tires?

As I stated, speed signal is generated at the wheels on 3rd gens. Changing gears does not affect the speedo when it’s read at the wheels. So on a 3rd gen the speedo should read exactly the same today as it did before you ever touched the gears.

33’s and 5.29s on the auto is a significantly shorter final drive ratio than stock. If speed was read off the driveshaft or transfer case, you’d be reading fast like the old truck. But it isn’t, so you aren’t.

If you don’t like the actual speed being higher than indicated, you can get. hypertech calibrator for 2016+. Plugs in between the cluster and the harness. You can put in whatever tire size you want to either make it read accurate or fast like your old truck. Personally I like it dead accurate.

That is really interesting. I'm running the same tires on my 2022 as on my 2006 and the speedo read is different between the two. Generally I don't pay much attention to my speedometer (since it was never right anyway) & I just try to drive slower than the maniacs and faster than the idiots...

But thanks for answering my question. And I really do love the 5.29's!

Some second gen’s have a speed sensor on the transmission. When you slow down the driveshaft speed it will alter the speedometer. Third gen’s use wheel speed.

Yeah, just a difference in models. I believe the 2nd gen reads off the driveshaft which is usually a sensor mounted in the transmission or transfer case reading the output shaft. As such, gearing will make that spin faster, speeding up the reading. Larger tires would slow it back down.

I bet the 5.29s are awesome, if I had the auto I’d run 5.29s no matter what tires I ran. Probably gonna end up doing 4.88 on my manual with stock tires.

edit: apparently it depends on transmission on 2nd gen. On 3rd gens I believe they’re all off the wheels.
