Toyota hydrogen testing

i have worked with Hydrogen quite a bit doing catalytic hydrogenation reactions, but solid fuel cell technology isn’t the same as pressurized gas cylinders.

 

This is Exactly why Hydrogen concept cars have been around for decades, but still not produced on any significant scale.

Looks great on paper to the ignorant, but as a hazmat tech, all i see is leaking gas.

 

You understand that the pollution from a huge natural gas (or even coal) powerplant is significantly less than the pollution from a single internal combustion engine, right?

Sure, the plant is probably about twice as efficient but it's much more than twice as "big" in terms of energy than a single vehicle.

 

I have ridden in propane converted diesels and thought they lacked enough power to get up and go when called for.

in other words if you did not “enjoy driving experience” and were will to sit tight while everyone overtook you.

Does anyone have experience with hydrogen fuel cells accelerating experience specifically?

 

I’d sure like to see your data on that one, especially for coal. If one car polluted more than an entire coal plant, well, we’d still be using coal.

 

im not worried about global warming. I want to see what innovations humans come up with if energy is unlimited and virtually free. High efficiency solar combined with solid state hydrogen fuel cell could do it. We have unlimited sunlight and water (we can even do electrolysis on salt water then burn the hydrogen which makes fresh water to help with water fresh shortages)

a hydrogen fuel cell based engine is still an internal combustion engine. It just burns hydrogen instead of gasoline or diesel. So it could have all the benefits of gas engines (power, range, bad ass sounding exhaust growl, etc) but we wouldn’t have to worry about gas mileage or anything because high efficiency solar generation of hydrogen would be almost free to produce compared to oil.

Even if we could solve all the hydrogen generation issues and safety concerns, there is still the big elephant in the room, distribution.

Then I would imagine you’d need to build special transport trucks and the insurance would be hefty. You’d also need to secure a location, make it safe for hydrogen storage and pay significant insurance costs, at least until it’s proven safe. And I for one would not look forward to living near one. All this would add countless billions in additional cost paid by who? Me? Hell no, I pay enough already lol!

There’s a reason why EV’s are getting the nod over hydrogen. It’s relatively easy to drop a charging line, ATM billing device, (not even needed with an app) compared to a hydrogen station. It’s all about the money, drop gas prices to $1 a gallon and you wouldn’t hear a peep about pollution or mpg's from anyone.

The problem is that there’s no free lunch.

 

The video @Taco X is worth a watch and the point he makes is the biggest advantage of using H2 to power what we need.

The issue with using H2 for vehicles will be a challenge as there will need to be an infrastructure to be built for its distribution of which there is very little installed today.

 

It may be easier to get started because you can just run electric lines, which we've been doing for like 100 years, but the supply side for large batteries could grind the whole thing to a crawl. So hydrogen could easily outpace regular EVs, since they only need a small battery. Add the fact that Japan uses hydrogen to solve other areas of the economy, it may not be long before the world follows suit

Yeah gas will fall again (not really all that high now, considering the first time I filled up my first vehicle over twenty years ago I paid $2.26) and when it does people will slow way down buying EVs

 

At a certain point, EV's become the norm, with taxation, incentives, and gasoline costs playing heavily into people's choices. In BC over 15% of new vehicles sold were EV's in 2021 when gas was relatively cheap. The infrastructure is in place to navigate the province pretty seamlessly if you drive on paved roads, which is about 90% of the population.
I'd personally way rather put money back into a provincially owned hydro electric grid than pay the $9.00+ a gallon 87 octane gasoline price so some CEO gets a $3,000,000.00 "Bonus" for coming up with some stupid reason why I'm paying said $9.00 a gallon.
Big oil can suck it.

 

Don't worry they'll get their bonus. Big oil would just be replaced by big battery. Batteries also don't solve manufacturing processes that need to burn fuel

A Mini Cooper Electric is pretty close to the same cost as a gasoline powered one after rebates here, but while it costs $15 in gas to go 100km's in the gasoline version, it costs about $2 in the electric version. But yes, I get what you are saying.
