The logic is that you probably wont kill the bear in the first shot. Especially those super aggressive inland brown bears. So you blind and take away its sense of smell in the first 2 shots, because even if it cant see you it still smells you and can find you with that sense alone. Then, you finish the poor boye off.

What Im thinking is that yes, that makes sense, in theory, but if you’re able to get 2 shots off at its face, why not just have them be some good ole big game rounds and seal the deal.

    The logic is fucking stupid.

The only thing worse than an angry bear is a angry wounded bear. Worse is an angry wounded bear that escapes to either die a slow death days later and/or go after the next poor unlucky persons to happen through the area.

Also, brown bears live on the coast, grizzlies live in the interior.

No. No. No. No. If you’re shooting any large aggressive animal that wants to kill you the first bullet and every other afterwards should be intended to stop it. The reason everyone who knows what they’re doing uses hard cast lead, wide meplat bullets is to increase the chance of that the one shot you might fire hits the brain, spine or major joints. The bullet isn’t intended to expand but rather to penetrate end to end through the target and hopefully hit something important on the way through to prevent it from killing you. A bear shot with a nice expanding hunting bullet in the heart will still kill you before it dies. Break its spine or shoulder and it’s much less likely to get to you and kill you.

More likely to be attacked by a 2 legged animal vs 4 anyways. They're the ones you can't trust

For the wife, we have a Glock 20. Its the biggest gun she will actually carry while hiking around.

For me, I just bought a 44 magnum Ruger in the 4.5" barrel. Still need to grab a holster for it though... I haven't found one yet that I love that also has a spare speedloader or two on it. The main reason for the 44 mag is that while hunting I feel the 10mm is a little small. The brown bears are no fun to mess with, and a bad mauling happened right where I hunted this last year a couple weeks after I went.

Doesn't matter now, I gave it to my dad.

Ordered a S&W Model 69 with a 2.75" barrel to replace it with.

Damn thing is sitting a the Orlando FedEx distribution center right now, will pick it up at my FFL Monday.

How would you like 12 rounds of .357 magnum power in an auto pistol? My pack gun is a usp45 with a spare mag of .45 super. That round is extremely hot and worth a look

Agreed. The only bears around here are the blackies and they're not really a threat. I've carried bigger, heavier guns before but my usual hiking/backpacking/paddling gun is a S&W 642 with either 158gr SWC or the Speer GDHP. Good enough for two legged varmints, feral dogs, etc. If I'm kayaking I'll often replace the first round with a CCI shotshell since we have water moccasins around here.

Normally a G20 or occasionally a S&W 629 mountain gun if I’m feeling old school. If you need to shoot something you damn well better intend on killing it

Just make sure if you’re dealing with grizzlies that you’re using the right type of ammo. I wouldn’t recommend hollow points unless they are bonded with some ass behind them.
Cast bullets probably work the best or FMJ.
Hollows can open up to much before getting into any vitals since a grizzly is more dense in everything. You’d be relying on a head shot on the fly.

Also I saw this link on another forum sometime back, thought this would be a interesting read for anyone interested.

Bear spray, guys. Unless you ride your MTB with a shotgun on a sling or a gun in a holster, which…you don’t. Talk to the park services guys. They’ll tell you the same.

In my early days, I carried a Ruger Vaquero in 44 Mag in a cross-draw rig. About 15 years ago, I upgraded to a G20SF, which I carry in a Gunfighters Inc Kenai chest rig. I'm not particularly a Glock fanboy, but I wanted a reliable 10mm with 15rd capacity. Eventually, I hope to upgrade to an S&W M&P10, but I think any 10mm would make an all-around good gun.

Glock 40. I used to carry a .357 mag...until an experience in the Olympic National Park where my wife and I wound up coming across several bears in April. Came around a bend on the trail and was facing one, after slowly backing out we realized we were in the middle of at least 5. We reported our encounter to a Ranger, she wasn't surprised and said the bears were all over the place that time of year. Whether they were hungry, horny, or just hanging out, it was quite the harrowing experience. First option is always just get out of there, which is why I always figured the 6 rounds was more than enough. I hope to never use it but feel much better with 16 rounds at the ready rather than 6.
