How were you able to prove they did it…. Happenwhile you were there? It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been there.

Ask if dealer would warranty it. Probably not, but never know

Any PBlaster or Fluid Film overspray on the threads?

What brand of torque wrench? Some will not click if you reef on it too slowly. I broke a stud that way with a Neiko.

^Lubricants on the threads increase the preload at any given torque value. Same 83 ft-lb with lube stretches the bolt more than dry threads.

You never know with things of this nature. Could have been a bad lot of wheel studs, improperly heat treated even.

    too much lubrication

OP lubed the stud too much

you never lube a stub that much

noob mistake, soft studs bust too easily with too much lube

I didn’t lube them at all. Never do. I do use anti seize around the hubcentric area but that’s it.

Had a respected repair shop repair a slow leak tire. The next time I pulled the wheels off to do a tire rotation, (2) of the lugs were cross threaded and snapped. Last time I took my vehicle to that shop.

Have to “like” for the Eagle Talon reference. Mine wasn’t turbo, but I had a red with black roof 93 Eagle Talon, and the studs on it were broken as well. 2 of the 4 wheels had broken studs when I bought it in 1996. Ah the memories…. The automatic seat belts worked for a bit but then broke, the RPMs would randomly drop below 500rpm when idle where it almost dies. But but but, being in high school at the time it was a chick magnet!!! The backseat was small but it served its purpose……

I had the same thing happen to be the other day and I didn't even have an impact to run it down with. Hand brake was on and I was torquing the wheel in the air to 83ft-lbs. i have a digital torque wrench and watched the torque peak at 72ft-lbs then start rapidly decreasing. Repositioned and barely tugged it and heard a snap of the stud. I have a 21 Tacoma. I suspect a bad batch of studs. I replaced it myself because i'm a mechanic and didn't feel the dealership would cover it since they didn't take off the wheels even but it's worth a shot. They may have a bulletin on it and cover it for you. A new nut and stud cost me 17.73 at the local Toyota dealer.

Only takes one over torque to weaken a stud. Could have been a Friday build at the factory or maybe a tire needed to be changed upon delivery to the dealer.

This can happen if your truck has too much torque. See exhibit A.
