For a friend of mine who’s from buffalo. He had a shed full of a ton of lumber so I made a trade with him

Oh it’s just finicky and requires sitting over it with a torch popping bubbles  too tedious for my taste

I think I already know the answer to this, but has anyone ever ordered one of the cutting board kits? It feels like cheating kinda, but I am running out of time to find a good hardwood source and I really wanted to try making a couple cutting board Christmas presents for family members, so I ordered a kit that provides the wood. I'm assuming that my knee injury will heal enough that I can spend some time in the shop between now and Christmas to get them done.

I've seen them.. basically you just glue them together. You will need a lot of clamps and some Tite Bond III.

    Do you have a planer?

You can literally glue it together in a day, but you'll need to do a lot of sanding and figure out how you want to finished the edges etc.

I have access to a planer. Haven't used it yet, but the guy who owns the shop can show me. Got plenty of clamps and glue.

So.. you're going to glue each strip together.. something yiu can't dilly dally on.. then clamp it to squeeze it together but you also have to clamp them across the top to keep them from sliding upwards.

Keep the ends of the boards square on one end but plan on trimming flush on both ends of the board after its dried.

You'll want to run it through a planer to make it flat ... test it on a flat surface since a wobbly cutting board is dangerous. It'll need sanded to at least 220 grit, then spray with water to raise the grain, then sand again.

The board will need to be "sealed" with a food grade mineral oil. Let the first coat really soak in before wiping off and apply 2 more coats. I use these products from Walrus Oil

Whoever you give it to need to be instructed to store the board on edge to prevent it from warping.

Those are lovely! I chose a simpler design. They are 5 pieces each with varying widths and color. Just want to get the practice/experience so I figured I should go easy to start.

Yes.. the ones I posted require a few more cuts and glue ups etc.

When I mentioned finishing the edges, this is what I am talking about.

    20210819_124607.jpg

That's a freshly oiled board with a 45 degree chamfered edge top and bottom and corner. That was all done with a router table and chamfering bit

Also cause I haven’t seen anyone say it yet. When you’re doing patterns like that keep in mind that it typically looks like doodoo until you’re in the finishing stages. Don’t give up on the design until you’re actually done.

Or at least mine always look like crap until it’s time to begin sealing or staining :hattip:

    This!

And you have to take the time with patterns to make sure they're oriented correctly! I made a mistake in the first one I posted today but didn't realize it u til I was wet sanding it because all the wood looked the same during glue up

 yeah, I think I'm kinda used to things not looking right until they're done.

Is staining safe with cutting boards? I guess since you're sealing after? I've never used mineral oils to finish, so I'm unfamiliar with its qualities.

Butcher block oil is what I use. Put it on in thin coats until the wood stops soaking it up then wipe it clean.
