I recently bought a 99 tacoma 2.7l Automatic Prerunner with no reverse. New filter and shift solenoids and still no reverse. Fluid black as night. Its toast. In my attempt to find a replacement, i bought a prerunner auto from a 3rz 99 4runner. Its alsomst the same thing, until you find out that the tailhousings are different and the 4runner uses a slip yoke single piece driveshaft.

So my question is, will a 3.4l prerunner automatic swap into my 2.7l truck if i swap the bellhousing over to the RZ bell? Are the input shafts the same length and spline count so i can use my torque converter and have everything bolt up? The 3.4l 2wd autos have the fixed output on the back so i can reuse my driveshafts. The 3.4l automatics are much easier and cheaer to find in Houston.

Check in with @dunc_werks, he might have something to add.

Personally, if it were me - I'd keep looking and find the correct trans.

Just picked up the 3.4l prerunner taco auto trans. So far it looks the same with the exception of the fluid dipstick on the passenger side instead drivers like the 3rz. Ill be swapping pans so i can put a new filter anyways. This one has the fixed yoke on the output so hopefully the input shaft is the same length and i can simply swap bellhousings to bolt it all up. Ill report back this afternoon.

Heyo. The bell housings should be the same depth between the 3RZ and 5VZ transmissions. Swapping those over and your pan should have you sorted I think. I've fitted a 3RZ torque converter to a 5VZ transmission for fitment before and it goes right on.

If you're anywhere near 92647 I have a 3RZ pre runner transmission available. Out of a 2002 with manual kick down cable.

Hope you're sorted and on the road soon!

Thanks for the reassurance on the interchangable parts. I kind of figured it would work out. Toyota likes to reuse parts whenever possible. Im in texas so a little far from you, but i appreciate the offer.

Update. I used the 3rz torque converter and bell on the 3.4l auto. All bolted up fine. Input shafts are identical. I swapped pans so the dipstick is drivers side. Filters were different so I left the 3.4 one. Fluid looked fine in the used trans with unknown miles. Got it all back together and I now have working reverse.

just another Option for those who can’t find the 3rz Tacoma 2wd autos in a junkyard.

There's only two autos on these.....
the 5 lug rwd's came with a43d..at least til 2000......all others should be 340e......
might be a 340f on later ones.....

The 340 is mostly an electronic remake of the A42/A43's......and share alot of parts....

    340's are plentiful......nation wide......

what a lot of people dont know is the older a43's are used in many asian models going back to '81......so a lot of local transmission shops can get all the parts for these......and can even readily get whole remanufactured ones.....

Your tranny should be listed on bottom corner of your door vin plate.....

Along with rear end ratio....A02A......a 3.58 ratio??
