Does 1GR-FE allow OBD2 scanners to erase codes from vehicle itself?

I was under the impression that Toyota did not allow external OBD2 scanners to erase codes from the vehicle itself and it had to be done internally. I did "erase codes" on the scanner thinking it would only clear the cache on the scanner but the check engine light went off. The code it was showing was "P0101 -- mass airflow..." that came on about 45 mi driving after an engine rebuild, check engine off at first.

I could have sworn that before "erase codes" on the same scanner would not reset the check engine light or the codes on the vehicle itself but only its internal cache.

Yes. You can erase codes and turn the CEL off.
    I’ve done it.

Pretty much all current vehicles (with the exception of 2018+ Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep stuff (only allows codes & data to be read)) allow engine (PCM) codes and generic data to be read and cleared by any OBD compliant scanner.

Many vehicles since around 2010 have what's called mode 10 (permanent) codes which will remain in memory for a period of time even after they are cleared although they won't turn on the CEL and they won't show up on a normal code scan.

Now codes in modules other than the PCM can only be read and cleared with a scan tool that supports them.

TBH, I am with them. I wouldn't want 3rd party tools messing with my ECU data, even as low key as CEL codes.

    Not me.
If it weren’t for 3rd party, I couldn’t afford to work on my stuff.
I can’t imagine the subscription price of OE software. @Dm93 might know the price of OE subscriptions.
But some are thousands a year.

It's a pain for independent shops like where I work because it adds another subscription cost plus you have to maintain your scan tool subscriptions to use it and you have to be connected to the internet to connect to the vehicle.

Most OE scan tools are over $1k per year, aftermarket tools vary wildly in cost per year to keep the software up to date although most can be used without updating just not on 2018+ Chrysler stuff.
For those of us that own our own scan tools it's not worth it, I just don't do the newer Chrysler stuff.

Did you try cleaning or replacing the mass airflow sensor? Codes will come back if the issue isn't resolved.

    $1.00 there's an aftermarket intake involved. Probably a K&N, S&B or Volant.

Good to know about the newer stellantis vehicles (not that I was tempted to curse myself with any of it anyway) but would you still be able to erase those codes with a battery disconnect?

Some codes will clear with a battery disconnect others will not, it just depends on the vehicle and type of code.

Not sure where you got that impression, but the code(s) will probably come back after you’ve completed the required drive cycles for the PCM to interpret all the sensory data.

now the real question, is that rebuild the engine that you attempted to check piston ring seal with tap water???

Well the Mode 10 was introduced mainly for the picky emissions testing states so they had another level of verification that someone just didn't clear the codes to pass emissions.

Chrysler introduced the Secure Gateway Module after it was shown full control of the vehicle could be taken over by hacking their infotainment system.
Without secure access all you can do is read codes and data from modules but no commands can be issued.

Unfortunately with vehicles being as connected to the outside world as they are, being fully drive by wire, and the EPA wanting to prevent emissions modifications I suspect it's only a matter of time before other manufacturers follow suit.

I like electronics and fuel injection but it has absolutely gotten out of hand in the past 5-10 years with the amount of unnecessary crap they are putting on vehicles and farm/offroad equipment today.
It takes an engineer to diagnose and fix stuff now and it's all made to barely last until the warranty is up and then crush it and build a new one.

Agreed. There is the right amount of modern stuff in vehicles (IE fuel injection, ABS) but having to have a subscription to activate a computer to have access to seat heaters which needs access to the internet to do so is asinine.

yes that was exactly what fixed it. also replaced the air filter which, on a second look, was pretty filthy.
