Hope everyone is doing well. I just bought a low mile 2013 regular cab Tacoma with the 2.7 and a 5spd manual. I live in the US Virgin Islands, we have very steep hills and barley get over 50mph. When we do get up to that speed it’s not for very long. The truck has a terrible time getting started again in first gear once stopped on a steep hill. It’s almost impossible if i have any sort of weight in the bed. I plan on doing a lift with tires no bigger that 33’s. I’m trying to get some insight if I should go 4.88 or 5.29. Id like to truck to be over geared a bit if I ever need to throw my tools or a few bags of concrete in the bag. As of right now I’m only really able to use gears 1-3. Constantly down shifting while going up hills. Any insight would be a big help. Thanks

@whatstcp or @BassAckwards has a regeared 2.7. Maybe one of them can suggest a good ratio. 5.29 might not be too low since you don’t get up to speed much. But one of those 2 will have a better idea.

4.88s were the sweet spot with 33s on my truck. I have 5.29s and 34s right now and it’s overgeared. I’m going to give 4.10s a try again soon since the truck is turbocharged now

Did your 4.88s have your truck driving as if it was stock with the larger tires?

Yes very close to stock or slightly more gear as compared to stock with the 295/70r17s

Check this site out, you can compare different gear ratios and see how many rpms you’ll be turning at a given speed. You have an R155 Transmission, they should have that listed on the drop down

Can I tell by the VIN what gear ratio I have? Mine is an '07 2.7L with the 5 speed manual.

If you have a 5 lug truck with the 5spd you have 3.31s. If you have a 6 lug/PreRunner/4x4 Truck, then it came stock with 4.10s.

Ok thanks - I should have specified 6 lug SR5. Big difference in the final drive ratios.
