1GR FE Oil gallery leak. Initial findings

The thing is if its the same size plug as a 2AZ 4cyl, NAPA sells the plug. Its a 20mm freeze plug. I know it works for a 2AZ not sure for the 1GR. You might want to tell your dealer to look into it. Hope this helps..

 

Its not a freeze plug, obviously I guess, since it's leaking oil. I don't know why they want to short block the engine. I'd think there'd be one of many ways to solve this problem. One issue might be, freeze plugs can occasionally fail.. engine blocks shouldn't. I'll ask the service guy if its something I can go look at, just to satisfy curiosity.

One thing he did say is. It looks like a 20 cent part, but toyota doesn't sell it without a block.

Maybe it shows a failure in machining and "better safe than sorry".

 

Oh yea. 2 weeks for the parts and repair. I hate the camry they gave me (though i'm thankful for it, didn't even ask for a loaner). I want my 6 speed.

 

Its a small freeze plug type plug that holds back oil not coolant. Like I said I have not seen it on the 1GR but I bet that's your leak. Your service guy is correct that you cant get just a plug from Toyota without a short block but that dose not mean you cant get a new plug that fits, just not from Toyota. What ever the fix I hope you get it done without any problems or dealer drama...

 

Yea, I dont think this dealer is going to fix it any way other than how tmc says. He said as soon as he foumd what it was he just called toyota and requested instructions. Guy sounds like he really knows what he's talking about, unlike some service writers that have no clue. Like I said. I said rear main, he said "woah, that's not good, and dropped to the ground and slid under the bell housing in his nice pressed, tucked, company aloha shirt. Even got his fingers dirty checking the oil drip. Claimed he climbed under again when they pulled the transmission to find the oil leak. Described it as if he did the work himself. Good guy so far (jinx).
Every time I go to servco I get warm fuzzies. I feel bad trying to talk them down. Third car I've bought from them, first 2 were scions so I've never seen the service bay. They're made in japan for jdm. Built like modern 80s toyotas... without rust so far.

Just a matter of getting a technician that's experienced and attentive to detail. I remember when I was a tech, you make a mistake, like the third one of the week, or an expensive one, you might cover it up rather than tell the foreman and get a hollering. It happens. Hopefully not with this guy.

I suppose this messes up my "numbers matching" chassis numbers though eh?

Like I said earlier that is major service that will follow the vehicle...

 

Should ask him if you can keep the engine block after. Fix the whole yourself and you've got a spare!

 

In my experience, warranty parts need to be returned to toyota, or at least held. Proof of work. Just like theyre supposed to keep your parts for you.

 

I've been looking around, and I can't find anything that says anything about engine numbers and titles or anything. only fools use or report to that car checking company.
I don't plan on covering it up, but "following the car".. nah.

The only time you'll see engine numbers looked at (and I'm not even sure they mean anything any more) is on vehicle theft and document counterfeiting, because they're trying to fool the customer not the police, they'll only change the dash.

No laws I can find anywhere about making it a "salvage" title or something because you change 1 numbered part.

Chalk it up under the rest of the urban legends.

No problems so far in the 4 miles I've driven it, and it's all detailed like it was going up for sale... the outside anyway, they didn't eff with the inside too much, it wasn't cleaned out when I dropped it off. Just on time too, that camry was starting to have shifting problems.. I take no responsibility for that.....

only negative.. well.. 2.. I didn't have my truck for 2 weeks, which sucked big, not just driving, but had to borrow a friend and his dodge ram a few times. AND.. the thing was on dead empty when I picked it up and gas has gone up 70 cents, so, had to get gas immediately after leaving.. I mean DEAD empty. But so was their loaner.
