pretty easy, just unscrew the bolt, fold and clip the panels and have someone help you lift the cover up.

when I had oem tonneau installed on my truck, I made sure I got my original plastic bed rails back, apparently I have been told that dealership just throw them out in the garbage if you don't ask for it. So now I have original rails sitting in my workshop and can reinstall back if I decide to sell the tonneau cover with the oem cutoff rails. So guys always ask for your "ORIGINAL RAILS" back.

My trucks cover was factory installed and there are no original rails...unfortunately.

Is there any cap of sorts that I need to cover where the bolts currently are or will an uncut bedrail cover that void?

Am I understanding correctly that I have to 1). remove the tonneau cover itself.
    2). Remove the 6 bolts/mounts.
3). Remove the rubber plugs closest to the cabin?
    4). Install uncut bed rails.

Am I missing a step? Thank you for your help!

No bolt caps needed, the rail caps cover the holes. You got it pretty much-
Also remove the forward support from the front middle of the bed, right below the slider window. Stock trucks just have empty holes there. If you want to fill them, put in other bolts or plastic caps (True Value has them).

Thank you. So the only plugs that need removing are closest to the cabin, correct? I've seen some picture of folks plugging some gap near the tail gate when installing a cover and got thoroughly confused.

That gap is in the 2 front corners between the sides and front bed walls after you put the new caps on the side rails- my ARE camper shell installer used black adhesive foam to seal it, but black silicone would work too.

Similar situation here in Edison, NJ. Just bought a 2017 Tacoma long bed with an unwanted OEM Tonneau cover. Want to put on a cap, and don't want to put cover in garage loft eternally. Anyone want this cover locally can have for $250 and their rails.

Apologies if this is bad forum etiquette (responding to an old thread) but I am a little confused about something and was hoping for clarification. I just purchased the TruXport roll up cover and plan to replace my OEM rigid cover. It was hard to decide between the truXport and the LoPro but based off this thread, I may have made the correct choice. I went to install it last night and quickly realized that the brackets could not slide into the tracks because the locking bolts that the rigid OEM cover clicks into are in the way. My plan was to remove the top rails to get access to the locking bolt hardware, remove them, and then reinstall the bed rails with the cut outs. If I bought the LoPro, which mounts next to the bed rails, I would understand why new bed rails are required but since the TruXport mounts on top of the rails, I assume I am OK, because it will completely cover the cut out portion. Does this make sense or should I drop more money for new rails?

    Thank you!

Yes, makes sense. But iffy that it will cove the cut outs. New rail covers are around $150 each. Just removed my oem cover and went with Bakflip MX4.

Living here in new england i was constantly having snow fill up my trucks beds, plus the rest of the year it'd rain getting anything i had in the bed wet....what a pita. Told myself i was getting my next truck installed with a tonneau cover. It was the best thing i did. The factory folds right up, and comes right off with one bolt when needed. Can't get much easier.

Sounds like it would be off your truck a good bit. But still, if it were me i would take it off (one bolt!) and store it. They absolutely do come in handy.

Thanks Man, and I checked out the Bakflip, which is similar to the LoPro in that it sits next to the top plate. The truxport sits directly on top and covers all but 1/8 of it.

As others have mentioned, it’s very simple.

Also, you can easily sell that. I believe they were an 800$ add on? Someone will prob throw a few bucks your way for it. I’d buy it if you were local, and I already have one. :p

My 2022 Tacoma came with the tri-fold factory tonneau cover, I really didn’t want one but came that way and was about $800 added to the sticker price. I find the thing just about useless. I’ve taken it off and back on several times in order to load different things. It weighs about 85 pounds and is cumbersome to handle. It’s kinda of a catch 22, my mileage improves with it on but when I need to haul/load something, I have to take the damn thing back off again. Now it stays off, I’m tired of screwing with it.

That's why I switched to MX4. It opens, all the way. OEM, opening only 2/3's the way is poor design.

Just curious because I don't have the OEM tri-fold cover but the Undercover tri-fold cover. Does the OEM cover not have a provision to prop up the last panel to give full bed access?

No, you need to remove the cover if you want full access. With a 6' bed i have, the oem cover works out well for most my needs.
