Nice. Is it a promotion you’re interested in? Sometimes they get too managerial.

I enjoy soldering pcbs and building embedded electronics in general.

Well that was fun, 2 hours just to sand off that much paint off this old door my wife picked up from an architectural salvage joint. Finish the rest later. Gonna eventually put it in Sofia's room.

sure hope that wasn't lead paint...

Yeah, I've had the senior SE title dangled in front of me for a few years now. It would mostly be the same as what I do now, just higher visibility and less code intensive unless there's something large to develop that the junior devs can't handle with my guidance alone. We have another senior who does a lot of the same and a principal engineer who does a lot of heavy lifting as an independent contributor. He knows all things haha

    I haven't committed anything in like a week and a half haha. I've been pairing/doing code reviews/release management/triage a lot

Do you like pair programming? I find it interesting how polarizing it is. Some devs enjoy it, others insist they would quit their job if they had to do it.

As long as you still get to tickle that technical side regularly that feels like it might be pretty good. It’s also fun to teach people and even to guide the overall direction too.
Any chance of going back if you hate it?

I am both. It really can be make or break depending on the person. I'd rate my team as being highly collaborative, open to new ideas, and willing to give/take help so it's generally a pretty good experience. We inherited a react project that we need to rewrite from scratch so our senior is doing a lot of solo work and I pop in when he gets stuck to debug and supplement knowledge and it seems to be working out OK. I also setup GH actions and did some dev env stuff with the caching to make it faster for him to iterate.

Do you have to pair at all in your current gig?

I would still probably be in the technical track rather than the managerial one, but I am not sure which is better for me. It really depends on the day hahaha

We do some pairing. I'm trying to encourage it more. It's a funny thing... most of the devs on my team are happy with the results and say it was time well spent, but still need regular encouragement to actually do it.

Yes! Arduinos are pretty fantastic, especially if you get the higher end more powerful boards. I like the more bare metal stuff too, but the amount of work to get set up and going is a pain.

Tonight we’re doing a little gas pedal diagnostics and basic circuits with the gf before heading out
