    Hi folks,
I am sure most owners know the fact that the 3rd generation tacoma designs are supposed to protect the battery from over discharging and shut off and therefore protect the system from being too drained to start. This does not work... so the question is why...

Did the software folks overreach making this claim, is there possibly a firmware upgrade i need?

Are there some very specific things it will only work under like only if you are discharging from the 12 volt outlet directly but nothing from the console?

Anyone that can point me in the right direction on some of these questions i would be grateful?

    thanks so much,

I've never heard of such a claim and I don't think it was ever a thing on the Tacoma since my battery needed a jump multiple times

The newer trucks will turn off if left on, and headlights typically turn off with time as well.

    That’s it.

The toyota comfort plus has a trickle charger built in that turns on only at specific voltage but that’s an add on accessory and you have to plug it in.

If you leave the truck running it will run out of gas before the battery dies.

I accidentally left the door open all night, at some point the truck shut off the interior light.

False. This happened to me the other day. Doors open, lights on. I came back to a dark truck. Turned on the ignition, and all was well. Just like my old 2001 :notsure:

ok, thanks to you that offered honest good feedback... after hearing back from some of you that this feature did not exist i had to get to the bottom of where i could have been told this information. I am pretty convinced it came from the sales person when i purchased the vehicle. I am guessing he did a super fast read thru the manual one day and picked up on a couple highlights and passed them on to me and perhaps i didn't entirely digest (as it was not something we were dwelling on discussing) or perhaps he flat out misunderstood (or didn't actually read) the page in the manual i just found. Additionally there is a feature to turn off the lights which is an upgrade from some of my older Toys (i have owned them for 35years and they keep getting better and more complicated).

Yes, it is on me for not figuring this out earlier, yes i did also read thru the manual when i purchased the vehicle. i did not read every single section nor every word of every title, i should have probably read it more carefully, but life is busy and i read enough of it to start driving and past that it is a reference guide.

here is what may have caused my sales guy to tell me something similar to 'the system has protection so you cant drain the battery' see battery save function. it calls out saving the battery for the FOB and the vehicle... but clearly if you read this is not the same thing as protection like i started the thread asking about.

also there is some light off feature and also auto off mode, see the files. But again, not the feature i was lead to believe by the sales guy.

So the car battery was dead yesterday for the first time and it surprised me because i remembered being told it protected against that (almost sure it was my sales guy and now i realize he gave me bad information and it is on me to have confirmed this earlier but i didnt now i know).

The end of the story is my wife drives a honda 2018 CRV a decent car with great reviews and performs well for what it is... she was told the exact same thing when she came home with her new car and a year later her car did the same thing... we had to jump start it. So now i need to go get her manual and find out if that is real or perhaps just some BS a sales guy either made up or maybe just accidently got wrong from whipping thru the manual.

thanks for motivating me to get to the bottom of this now i know it does not exist, beyond the three attachments shown, which is better protection than none but certainly not what i was led to believe.

do you mind elaborating on exactly what purpose your post was supposed to achieve.... did you actually think it was useful? or necessary? Please either make useful inputs or stay off the post. Who cares if you have 1000000 posts if half are one-line attempts to insult, don't bother. this forum is better than that.

I work on Commercial vehicles that have a 'Battery Protection System', leave the vehicle for 3 days and it needs to be jump started... I have not seen a battery sensing cutoff System that works well yet.

As for the Tacoma,it definitely does not have an automatic battery disconnect system to protect battery drainage. It does have a system that helps reduce drainage, the vehicle goes to sleep after a set time,so lights and the network shut down. There is still background systems operating though... several hours after shut down, there are emissions tests that your truck does automatically.

Now, I see you have over 200 posts... so you aren't new here... people here like to rib and troll and have fun... your best bet is not show weakness... join in have some fun... the info you want will come out eventually.

Also, your wife's Honda will be the same as the Tacoma... no battery disconnect, just the sleep mode and background emissions tests...

Modern vehicles have to run emissions test periodically to pressurize the fuel system. That’s why you hear the pump whirring in the garage hours after you shut off your truck. Also why the 2nd Gen always on fog mod would power up the lights periodically by itself.

I’ve installed a Power magic pro to cut power to my dashcam if the voltage drops below 12v during parking mode - but it only shuts off the devices wired into it.

I’ve never had the Tacoma not start, but I have had the voltage low enough that it reset trip meters on startup.

Enjoy your time here, have some fun, ignore whoever you want. Watch out for Friday posts..

also not surprised that the salesperson fed you a line. Most of us have ended up teaching them a thing or two during the sales pitch.
