tbh, i don't care about sales numbers. i got my truck, i bought it used even, so the new sales numbers matter even less.

lol, the 'water tight tailgate system' reminds me of that really old toyota/gm joke.

when toyota was starting to gain market share in the US, GM sent engineers over for a plant tour to see what differences in manufacturing they had. toyota was more than happy to show off their manufacturing plant.

at the end of the line, the GM engineers witnessed a tech placing a cat in every single vehicle just before it went into a finishing area.
asking their tour guide about it, the guide responded with " oh, that's to test panel sealing. if the cat's dead in the morning, it means all the seals are properly installed."

later on, toyota toured the GM plant, and found they had implemented a similar 'cat test'. when they asked about it, the engineers responded " oh, well we had to modify the cat test a little. if the cat's missing in the morning, it means we have a door seal problem. but as long as the cat is still there, the car is ready to ship!"

FWIW my wheeling buddy bought a new Nissan Frontier Pro4X

looks like a nice truck other than the super low frame rail design that plagues all Nissans that go off-road (you need about a 2” lift just to match the frame rail height on a stock taco).

anyways……….6 months of ownership has him with one diff replacement, the rear main engine seal replaced (pulled the engine) and a transmission recall that also means the tranny needs to be dropped. Maybe it’s a one-off lemon, but so far a POS in his mind.

Glad my 2017 Taco has been solid. Someday I’ll take it in for that 3rd brakelight gasket recall……..

I was checking out one of the Frontier forums and it seems like they have a lot of problems.

Was the transmission recall for the parking pawl. I heard Nissan couldn't sell trucks post recall until they were repaired. Don't know if that's true. No idea if the 23's not effected by the recall are using a different part, getting repaired at the factory, or have yet to be recalled.

Not sure if the rear main seal is a common problem or the diff. Was it the front or rear diff?

Edit: even the Ranger is a better option off road.

    It's a Nissan.

Have you seen some of the issue people have reported here for 3rd gen Tacomas?

Yes it was the parking pawl. The diff issue is also a known problem. The leaking engine may just be bad luck.

My buddy traded in his 2019 trd double cab for a frontier pro4x, and swears its a better more powerful truck. Idk about heated mirrors for $2k more. My sr5 came with them when i ordered the truck. I was a bit surprised to have them being my first tacoma owned.

Some of you may remember that last year Toyota announced that because of shortages and supply issues they were cutting production of all vehicles by 10-15% during the 2022 model year. I’ve not heard anything about the 2023 model year.

Just don't take down a road like the one to my house in the spring. A couple years ago my cousin crushed one of his exhaust pipes in his ridgeline while visiting me. Now he always asks how my road is before stopping over. I've rubbed a couple areas on my engine shield going back and forth with my tacoma, but nothing serious.

SV convenience package foglights heated seats/sreering wheel & mirrors tow package spray in bed liner utilitrac remote start.

I prefer the S trim and would want OEM fogs hitch reciever and AM spray in liner. I could live with out the heated mirrors, but wouldn't mind remote start. By the time I buy that stuff and get it installed it would probably be close to what that package costs. I prefer the manual seat in the S and don't need the heated seats or wheel.

He's got most of that crap in his frontier that i know of plus i think auto wipers. I can tell you the heated mirrors are one of the best things i like on my truck being here in new england with super frosty mornings. I never gave them much thought until finding out my truck has them.

I read some here are interested in a Nissan truck not knocking them as they are Japanese made vehicles so to me they are just as good as the Tacomas but better than any Dodge, GM of Ford any day.just saying.

The 3rd brakelight recall isn't too hateful, they just glued a little trim ring around the lens. Nice to hear your truck is still going strong compared to your buddies New Frontier.

Yeah. It’s a bit more hassle for me as I gotta take my canopy off to access the brake light. I don’t trust the jabronis at the dealer to do it. I don’t have any leaks but will do the deed in January and have them seal it up.

Truck is actually running better than ever honestly. The thing is just running so smooth and silent that I worry I’ll jinx it. The 3.5L is not a quiet engine, but over the last year mine has trended towards that “sewing machine” sound that my old Toyotas had.

Mine (3rd brakelight) started leaking after almost seven years.

I had got a recall letter to take it last year, but when I whent to the stealership, they gave me an appointment for like a couple weeks later to re-seal it, and I never took it or addressed the issue untill I noticed it leaking a couple months ago.

To make a long story short, I just bough a tube of black RTV silicon gasket maker, taped the outer area and sealed it from the outside since I was too lazy to take down the headliner.

All is good now after an hr or so of work with no waiting or stealership aggravations lol!

    They lie.

They're no where near as capable as a Tacoma out on the more challenging trails. Nissans generally offer more powerful engines overall and surprisingly decent mileage or at least on paper.

And just about anything is better than a Dodge now a days lol!
