Nope, way too far away. When I was 25 maybe, back then I could piss over the roof, now I have a hard time keeping it off my shoes.

I think most dogs sleep when traveling any distance. Mine would be sound asleep and we would pass a feed lot or dairy and she would bolt upright and shove her nose against the window looking around while sniffing as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

Kids seem to sit in the back and whine, dog seem to think, great time for a nap.

1000% this! We have 3 rescues here. Two were about 18 months when we got them and the third was just 8 weeks old. No issues with any of them.

As others have said, traveling with a puppy will not be fun or easy. I'd recommend a crate, blankets, and lots of towels in case it has accidents. You'll have to stop a lot and a co-pilot would be a good idea tend to the puppy.

1170 miles, pulling the camper from Charleston to Dallas, two dogs in the truck. 18.5 hours.

At 600 mi with a puppy and frequent breaks, you're looking at 9 hours minimum.

This. The best dogs I ever had were shelter dogs. They know what's up. Older dogs are even better. After the "newness" wears off, nobody cares whether the dog has papers or not.

At a minimum, get on petfinder.com and have a look. There are many breed specific rescues in your area.

Bay area to so cal ..picked up a lab puppy .he .slept most the way back on passenger seat

In my opinion breeders overbreed putting profit above the dogs health ....

All you people giving this man crap for buying the dog that suits his family. Where were you on the purchase decision of his home and truck?

That’s like saying only buy salvaged title vehicles and not from the dealership.

Where do you think all the shelter dogs come from? The puppy mills. 90% of dogs (rescues included) come from puppy mills.

If you want to “end breeders” Learn something today and read this article. Then go vote. Telling people to adopt not shop because it’s cutesy is worthless unless you go vote. https://insidesources.com/where-does-that-rescue-dog-come-from/

Just went about 750 miles to pick up our pup - long drive but worth it. Used a pet crate to keep him contained and safe during the drive. No issues. Took 12 hours on the return with stops for gas and puppy potty breaks. Obviously, all highway. Denver CO to Honey Grove, TX. Was a long drive but not like Denver to Phoenix - did that twice non-stop when son was in college. Enjoy the drive, take your time and congrats with the new family member!

Send a crate and crate pad/blanket to the breeder a week before you will pick up. Have the breeder get your pup used to confinement in his own crate. Will make your trip home soooo much easier.

OP you can also wear a shirt to bed for a few nights then send the shirt ahead of time and ask the breeder to wrap the dog in the shirt before bed. Gets them used to your scent.

Years ago when I was living in southern New Hampshire, I purchased a Labrador Retriever puppy in Charlotte, NC; to avoid the major metropolitan areas of DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York, I drove a slightly longer route which totaled almost exactly 900 miles. The puppy did pretty well; I stopped every hour to get him on the grass to either mill around or do his business, and we made the full trip in just shy of 15 hours. :)

One trick for crate training any puppy either on a road trip or at home is a wind up tic tok clock. Remember that puppies life was just shattered, taken away from everything it knows and trusted. The clock in the kennel reminds them of there sibling and mothers heart beats it really helps calm them down for kennel training.

I heard a quote elsewhere on this forum which went something like this, "I use Viagra to keep my shoes dry." :)

1529 miles, Corpus Christi Tx to Fort Knox to Chicago. Was a terrible time, I don’t recommend it.

The drive won’t be that big of a deal. But sometimes new puppies aren’t acclimated to riding in cars and get pretty sick. It’s not terrible if you have a passenger, but it’s pretty hard if you’re solo.

Picked up my Taco in Naples FL and drove straight through to MN which was 1750 miles. Took 29 hours because of traffic in ATL and 2 accidents, one of which closed the highway down for an hour.

Everyone is different, safety matters more than bragging rights.

I did 600km round for my dog, nearly lost my job over it, but it was worth it.

The issue is on the way home it will be distracting and taxing to have a rescue pup, so you'll need lots of breaks and time.

I have 2 trips to mention, first my longest trip then my longest trip to get a puppy like the OP.

My longest single trip was from Long Beach, MS, to Las Vegas, NV. Back in 2009 when I had a 2006 DCLB Tacoma Texas Edition it took me 27.5 hours to make that trip only stopping for gas, food and bathroom breaks. The trip was roughly 1,800 miles. I had extra gas cans and a jump box just in case because I’ve never driven out that far west before and wanted to be prepared. Once I got past Dallas I filled up the cans with gas just in case. I also had lots of emergency food and water. It was for a bachelor party and my friends still think I’m crazy for driving instead of flying. Below is the only pic I have of my old Tacoma.

    F1AF0894-2D89-44E8-948A-D98982C7CB24.jpg

This time last year I drove to Jacksonville, FL, to get a puppy from a breeder. Actually, I drove to Tampa to stay with a friend to see a Saints-Bucs game then drove up to Jacksonville to pick up the puppy. Jacksonville back home to Long Beach is roughly 480 miles. We stopped every couple hours or so so the puppy could use the bathroom. I bought a new kennel and folded the seats down in the back and the puppy did great.

I picked up this handsome AmStaff.

    This is him now.
