I drove home from San Diego to the Bay Area (450 miles) with my Vizsla puppy. I got a rental car that got better mileage and had an automatic, rather than my manual Subaru. He threw up in the console cup holder in the first 10 miles. I had a crate all set up for him in the back seat but the breeder told me that he would be fine on the passenger seat. We stopped every 80-90 minutes for a potty break. One thing you want to be aware of is you probably don’t want your puppy taking a potty break somewhere where a lot of other dogs do since their immunity will be low and you don’t want them getting sick.

Agreed, during my trip I kept on the lookout for a grassy margin to the right of the shoulder to pull off on. Twice during my trip state troopers pulled in behind me, saw the puppy, waved, and drove on. :)

I've driven to Florida and back every winter to visit family for the last 7 years. It was just under 1400 miles from my old place, and a little over 1400 now. I've done the trip in as little as 19 hours (in a TC), and up to 27 hours (with a kayak on the roof of my 4Runner). Average is 21-22, usually stopping for 1 sit down meal along the way. I also split the drive into 2 days once.

The best trips are when I would leave early in the morning. I start with a travel mug filled with coffee, but don't drink it until I have about a third of a tank of fuel left. Drive until the fuel light is on, refill the coffee, bathroom break, stretch, etc.

Stopping for a sit down meal about halfway through is a huge help! Otherwise, after about 12 hours or so, you start to feel weird. It's pretty brutal trying to make good time on such a long trip. I think stopping every 2-3 hours, and doing more prolonged stops is a much better method.

I followed my brother down a few years back, and we split the drive into 2 days. As much as I was getting antsy by the end of the trip, I felt much better when I arrived. Maybe I'll do that again when I go this year.

As far as traveling with a dog, I haven't had much luck with keeping them in a kennel. If you do, I'd recommend a snug fitting dog bed in the kennel.

As mentioned earlier, you're going to have to stop more frequently, and walk the dog.

This probably seems obvious, but don't forget to bring a water dish and water. I usually try to get the dog to drink a little at every stop, or at least put some in the dish and see if they want any.

I've had dogs get sick in the car, so be prepared for that.

Edit: I was just thinking about when we picked up our current BT, around 300 miles from home. We took a few prolonged stops along the way and gave him a lot of time out of the car. He sat on my ex's lap most of the ride. I can't recall if he had any accidents in the car or not.

Tonopah is...interesting. It's the only place I've ever told my wife to lock the doors while I put gas in the truck. My buddy's rear end gave out there as well and he got the same vibe. I should probably write a country song about it.
Anyway, that was part of a 1800km day, as I never like to sleep more than 1 night on the way to a destination (in this case, Vancouver).
In general, I prefer to drive no more than 600kms/400miles a day as I find it gets less enjoyable past that point.
Take your time enjoy your new pup. A cage is a good idea, as well as a blanket and chew toy, treats, water and food.

Interesting; it has been years since I drove through Tonopah (which I used to drive through several times per year), but I never once got that vibe.

Regarding a song mentioning Tonopah, my favorite is Willin' by Little Feat:
I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari
    Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin'

    :)

I slept there at an RV park on the north side of town. I didn't feel too sketched out and was back through there one time since.

I agree that shorter days are much better for enjoying the trip. Getting into camp or whatever by early afternoon has been my preference for a while now. I had planned to camp in Bend or Baker City, but it was either super windy or smokey from wild fires and was feeling a cold coming on. So, I just pushed through. Regardless, it was a great west coast tour.

Growing up in the east, it is all more or less the same. Everything west of the Rockie foothills to the coast is just stunning around every turn. Went on a motocamping trip through the Kootney Rockies that did nothing but confirm those feelings. Just absolutely stunning.

Furthest in one day was a little over 900miles. Not in the Tacoma. But I have routinely done 675 miles in the Tacoma. I have made this same trip with small dogs and yes they primarily just sleep as long as they are comfortable and I do my best to give them a least two options of where and how to lay down. I myself like to stop every couple hours and can stretch that if need to. But I would stop every couple hours and give the pup a chance to take care of business and stretch. Remember puppies are kind of like little kids. When awake they will be energetic but will need frequent naps. Food may not be a big deal but make sure to have fresh water available at each stop and be mindful of the sun on them.

How’s Los Angeles to Roswell, NM with a dog riding shotgun? About 950 miles, 14 hours driving (not including breaks). We took a lot of short walks and water breaks. I’d crate the pup in the back seat if it were me- also try to level the crate. Give it lots of walk breaks.

Both dogs I've had, came from a shelter. If you use a reputable shelter, the animals are temper tested and trained. I've had awesome dogs. An American Bulldog, and now my German Shepherd.

Tons of friends have dogs from breeders, and none of them are as well behaved as my dogs. My dogs also have a fraction of the vet costs. I'll take my 200 dollar rescue over any expensive full bred or designer dog.

Just saying! Don't go thumbing your nose at a rescue animal.

Oh man, I only get about 250kms a day moto camping max, as I'm always ducking off to check out some random dirt road that shows up on my backroads mapbook. SO much to explore in the Kootenays, especially if you have a dual sport.

Yeah. M/C days are shorter that car days. It was a sporttour trip for us at the time. Looking forward to a Taco camping trip up there sometime.

About 500 miles from KOH in 8 ish hours, left at midnight Saturday after 4400, got home about 830 AM Sunday morning. I think I made 2 coffee/fuel/bathroom stops along the way. 8 hours isn't bad in the truck, not sure I would want to push more than 9 or 10 hours without a good break or nap.

The furthest I had ever driven in a day was from Fort Myer's Florida to Akron Ohio. The trip was made in a Ford conversion van. What made the trip so memorable was that I was the only one of 8 people in the van who did not come down with food poisoning. There are advantages to being a vegetarian sometimes. They had all ate a variety of meals with shrimp and mussels late that evening before we left. We were getting on the road before 5 that morning when everyone was coming down sick.
When someone would yell pull over quick I had to do just that whether I was passing a car or not. I even remember family members ripping the side door open before we were stopped letting it blow. I felt sorry for what service stations we stopped at on the way with usually several members running for the bathrooms. Also remember having to walk one family member back to the van that became disoriented in the parking lot. The West Virginia turnpike with its twists and turns caused a lot of groaning from some who were still sick by then. From the Ohio State line I barely got us home because I was exhausted. This isn't a story about dogs but about people who were sick as a dog.
