I just bought a 2023 Trail Edition, and I was wondering what others use their storage boxes for. They aren't waterproof so that limits what you can put in them when its's raining. Maybe a waterproof tool bag?

Those boxes are a waste of time on the assembly line. The Trail Edition sells itself with out the boxes. I guess Toyota couldn't find a more economical way to install a cooler in the rear of the cab, that's why they went with the bed boxes. The 4Runner Trail Edition has a cooler in the rear cargo area, keeping with the theme Toyota wanted the Trail Tacoma to offer a cooler as well.

If Toyota could offer a bed box like Ram has that might be a good feature, but the Tundra does not have them as an option. I doubt the new Tacoma will. Sometimes it's better to just build trucks to be trucks, and let people buy their own accessories for them as they see fit.

I used mine (on my 2021) a total of 3 times. Twice as a cooler and once to store some stuff. The cooler was difficult; size limiting and not long lasting in Arizona heat. Honestly, they came out in March of this year and I barely sold them a month ago for $200. Not hating on them or the topic but I didn't find them useful, the extra bed space was more important to me. :)

I don't know if the Knapheide body fits on a Tacoma chassis? The whole concept of bed boxes leads me in this direction.

Thanks for all of the input. I was hoping someone had a clever way to use them, but I agree they are an odd size. I will give them a try but probably end up taking them out at some point. Still like the trail edition.

We bought a 22 trail edition about a month ago. I plan on removing them when I get a tonneau cover in the spring. I haven't used the "cooler" side but I keep 8 ratchet straps and a small break down snow shovel in the other. It basically just keeps the stuff from running around my back seat right now.

I took mine out and am working on building a water tight drawer for the bed that can hold fishing/camping gear. I think the storage is a great idea but those boxes are oddly shaped, small and take up a lot of bed space. I didn’t use it but every cooler I’ve owned needed to be drained and dried or it started to mildew. I don’t see how these built in coolers don’t start to smell. Mine will be for sale as soon as I get to 50 posts.

Just rolled it off the lot !!! So here comes the fun part.....
I was just about to post and ask what the price people were asking for them. I just got a 23’ Trail and will be taking them out to recoup bed space. I was hoping to put the $$ towards a Prinsu .
