I'd get a gas C8, those will be worth substantially more at auction twenty years from now. Not that I think gassers are going away.

Back then diesel was all the rage because it was the future !!! And you were really cool if you had a diesel car and you'd save so much money (sound Familiar) Europe was first then the US jumped in (sound familiar)started turning their V8's into diesel's because they all had to get onto the bandwagon. Of course not many stations carried diesel sort of like the EV charging stations (sound familiar). People paid over msrp and much more for diesels than their counterpart. Parts for diesels were 4x what a normal part was like a starter (sound familiar). Diesels in the real world also didn't come close to what they promised (sound familiar). Toyota has it right with hybrids people give them a hard time now about not all in on EV's but they are the smartest and most long rage long term looking car company there is. Look at Teslas rated worse in reliability and issues than fiat and a bunch of dopes are still dropping 100k. I saw a video last week were a Tesla has a small base ball size dent in the front and back and estimated cost to repair was 22k. Your average insurance is $3700 a year. I pay $1500 for a 22 Tacoma Pro and 22 4Runner pro combined per year !!! Where's the savings not to mention the 3 to 4 k for a charger and wait until the new yearly registration of EV's takes off which it has in other states and the charge per mile driven.

Check this out for real world test. 100k for a big golf cart that will have zero resale value. I'll pass.

    here's a quote
In the early ’80s, GM’s Oldsmobile Division’s passenger car diesel engines turned out to be such a disaster, the FTC had to step in and broker a massive compensation deal on behalf of millions of its angry buyers. The 1950s were GM’s golden decade; the 1980s its living hell. And the Olds diesel sprayed plenty of fuel on those flames.

    • The federal government and all 50 U.S. states impose gas taxes to fund road improvements, bridge and tunnel constructions, and other infrastructure projects
    • But with more electric vehicles on the road, it's getting harder to collect revenue since EVs don't fill up at the pump
    • Around 30 states now have an additional registration fee for EV and plug-in hybrid drivers with extra fees ranging from $50 too $200 a year
    • California requires drivers $100 per year for a zero-emission vehicle model year 2020 or later
    • Michigan requires $135 extra per year for non-hybrid EVS less than 8,000 pounds, while Oregonians pay $110 more per year

That’s all pure anecdote based on similarities, not factual statements. The two diesels I’ve owned were actually great. One towed a ton of weight with no issues and the other got 55mpg in normal driving.

I’d agree hybrids are a very good solution until battery and charging technology can make range longer and charging times shorter.

Until recently there weren’t a lot of other options for people wanting an EV. Hopefully added competition will push Tesla to be better. However, $100k is a bit of an exaggeration, the most common Model 3s you see on the road cost $47k.

My insurance for my EV is the same as it was for my last truck and about $200 more than it was for my Tacoma. If I didn’t live in an extremely expensive to insure state (CO) I’d be paying roughly $1400/year. Given that my truck is worth twice as much as a Tacoma higher insurance rates are to be expected. Quotes on a cheap commuter Nissan Leaf were in the same price range as a Corolla.

Home charging can cost as little as $200 to install an outlet for the included portable charger and generally tops out about $2k for parts and labor to install a hardwired charger.

EVs should pay a fee based on miles driven since they don’t contribute to the gas tax funds that provide for maintenance. No problems with that.

Yep, a known fact that EVs have worse performance in cold weather. The Lightning suffers far worse than most though. My personal experience is about a 10-15% decrease which is on par with ICE vehicles that also see reduced efficiency during the winter. Heating the cab requires energy from the batteries since there isn’t an inefficient ICE producing a ton of waste heat that can be utilized.

Do the T tops on the Hummer leak? For 1/3 of the price a Bronco hard top will do the same.

I remember the 80s GM diesel mess yup. Though, the Rabbit was a VW product and at least from my recollection the diesel part of that wasn't a lemon. I do think they were prone to electrical issues or something similar..

US government scientists have made a breakthrough in the pursuit of limitless, zero-carbon power by achieving a net energy gain in a fusion reaction for the first time, according to three people with knowledge of preliminary results from a recent experiment. Physicists have since the 1950s sought to harness the fusion reaction that powers the sun, but no group had been able to produce more energy from the reaction than it consumes — a milestone known as net energy gain or target gain, which would help prove the process could provide a reliable, abundant alternative to fossil fuels and conventional nuclear energy.

General motors was using gasoline engines converted to diesel as far as I have been told.

The motors were not reinforced to withstand the punishment a diesel produces. Remember that they do not have spark plugs and run on compression?

I had a Rabbit diesel. Put 100,000 miles on it and had less issues than my Tacoma.

I had a 1980 Rabbit L ran forever my first car ever. Had a kicking audiovox stereo. I remember flooring it and the gas pedal sticking kept accelerating that was fun :)

Another government failure and fleecing of the tax payors for another dream

Solyndra was a manufacturer of cylindrical panels of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin film solar cells based in Fremont, California. Heavily promoted as a leader in the sustainable energy sector for its unusual technology, Solyndra was not able to compete with conventional solar panel manufacturers of crystalline silicon.[1]

About two years after the Obama administration co-signed $535 million loans to Solyndra,[2] the company filed for bankruptcy on September 1, 2011.[3][4] A 2015 report from the Department of Energy found major flaws in Solyndra's business practices and claimed the company made "inaccurate and misleading" statements to obtain the loan guarantees, and also found fault with Department of Energy oversight.[5]
Solyndra received a $535 million U.S. Department of Energy loan guarantee, the first recipient of a loan guarantee under President Barack Obama's economic stimulus program, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The loan program took a $528 million loss from Solyndra

I worked down the road from Solyndra when they were in business. Had to pass by the building everytime I needed to get on the freeway. What a joke that was.
