Do they still make washouts enlisted?

Back in 1997 I had a E4 that was an Academy wash-out. Had just started his senior year and something happened.

Worst, and I mean absolute fucking WORST Airman I ever had to supervise. He ended up not finishing his mandatory 3 years for “failure to train.” He was on his way out with an administrative discharge…when he got a DUI at the front gate a week before his separation.

I’ve rarely met a former cadet that I felt safe putting my trust into.

There’s nothing like an overpaid private who thinks they’re actually in charge because they went to college. Give them a couple years and about half of them have sorted out their shit and are worth having around until they get out after their initial obligation. The rest that choose to stay in are almost never the good ones that should stay in.

By way of background, I didn’t enter the military from a service academy…my comments are from a much broader base. My respect is for all of those who choose to serve.

I questioned an Air Force E-3 in a non combat job how he had jump wings. Guess he was an academy kick out for cheating. His Dad was an Academy Grad so he was obligated to serve one enlistment. Got his wings the summer after his freshman year. Glad he didn’t become an officer. He could barely be and Senior Airmen.

Going to be difficult to answer that without making it political and locking the thread...again. so lets not do that in open forum. Thanks

I'll admit, I had one good fresh 2LT. Guy got there and one of the first things he said was that he wasn't going to tell us how to do our job but ask us to show him how we figured out the best way for us was. He also stuck around and led instead of telling the NCOs to get it done and give him a report.
We had another that was a dumbass who thought he already knew it all. Guy crashed the Raven immediately after it got launched to get eyes in a compound we got hit from.

When I was in Army Basic, we had a guy, mid to late 20's as I recall, E3 with Jump wings. He was not the least bit shy about telling anyone and everyone that would listen that he was an ROTC dweeb, and that his class <whatever you call it> went through Army Jump School and he earned his wings and was qualified to wear them. When someone asked him WTF he was doing going through Enlisted Basic Training, he said something like "I heard it would look good on future Fitness Reports"... or something similar. He was a bit on the annoying side, but he wasn't a total dick. And none of us were at all impressed by his wings. One of our platoon DI's was an E6, with a fair number of years in the 82nd Airborne. He took a 'special interest' in that guy :rofl::rofl:
