Good day. Have a question that hopefully someone can answer. I recently put a new clutch in my 17 sport. I kept it with an asen clutch but went with a stage 1 because of availability. Install the clutch and what's happening now is, it's not going into gear with 1st and reverse being the worst it will go nice a smooth occe it's in gear and everything is lined up, but as soon as I release the clutch and and try and get it into gear it gets tough again. I hope that makes sense. The only thing I can think of is that it needs to break in. I dunno. Seems like something going on as it shouldn't be so hard to put in gear. Thanks

Does the clutch feel soft? It might have some air in the lines that will reduce the throw.

Worn transmission oil can prevent selection of 1st and Reverse at a atop.

I changed my factory fill for Motorcraft XT-M5-QS at 30K, it meets Toyota specifications and made a surprising improvement in smoothness.
Now that you mention it I did have some difficulty selecting first before the change out, I had forgotten about it.

Rock Auto had the best price when I purchased it.

Are you sure the clutch disc wasn’t installed backwards? I’ve seen this before.

A UOA after a short duration on the factory fill, not by me, was not favorable. I swapped the fluid early on for similar reasons.

I did all my drive line fluids at 30K.

First trip around the block I felt the shifting was "slicker" for lack of a better word. As 48K now and it shifts perfectly, the gearbox gets better with age. I had completely forgotten about the difficulty getting into first until you mentioned it.

Yup. Did mine at 7k. The MT was swapped again at 55k when things started getting notchy. I shouldn't have touched the T case fluid, but lesson learned there.

I intend to have this truck for a very long time (retirement present to me) so I don't worry about a few extra hundred spent on proactive fluid changes.

Same here. The Taco is a lot of fun to toss around corners and play with off road. Just sayin' that the T case fluid was not worth touching for at least 90k. Preventively and naively changed it at 7k. Put in Ravenol, which did great for 45k+ of consistent use. Went back to the Toyota stuff, and will not look at it again for at least twice that mileage.

I used the genuine Toyota lube.
My only transfer case use is a 3 mile stretch of runway straight pavement that I exercise it on.
Not quite true - I did use it in the yard to move a utility trailer...

The 2Lo Mod helps with the exercise. I don't get out as often as I'd like.

I'm looking forward to the day that we get a yard with enough access to drive on. I'm done with suburbia.

Exercise the 4 Lo sometimes on the 200 foot driveway to the garage.
I have been out in the back of beyond for too many years, couldn't live in town.

The 2Lo Mod can also exercise 4Hi. Just have to cycle real 4Hi / 4Lo every once in a while to keep the actuators happy.

Yeah. I'm trying to convince my wife that being rural, but near a town is better than dealing with neighbors. Gonna take some work.

I live on a dead end dirt road off another dirt road that really isn't on the way to anywhere so the only traffic is people who live out here.
That kind of solitude sets a pretty high standard for finding another place.

    Not a chance man!

Besides we are on opposite coasts, I would need a fleet of semi trucks to move all my .... stuff...
...and a warehouse to store it in when I got there. ;)

    Were we, eh? Haha!

I'm waiting to hear if the clutch feels soft ( flaccid  )?

If not, then I might be suggesting the ADM. The person who pointed me most of the way there ( @rat107 ) noted that he did it got get a bit more throw for his Stage 2 clutch.
