I just recently drove from Sault St Marie MI to Guntersville AL. Had a short stop at a Costco in Fort Wayne IN, the rest were a few gas and food stops. We left at 7am ET and arrived at 10pm CT. 16hrs total and 970 miles. What a trip!!

1350 or so miles. From Palo Duro Canyon (a little south of Amarillo, TX) to Akron, OH. Took around 21h due to frequent caffeine stops and about an hour of construction.

Back when I wore a younger man's clothes, I did Saratoga Springs NY to Atlanta GA in one shot solo. About 18 hours if I recall. I kept saying "one more state" and before I knew it I was home.

I do the 19 hour trip (1300 Mile) from my house in N. Cal to my house in New Mexico almost non-stop, over & over. Like 30+ trips.
If I drive my Duramax with the aux. fuel tank I don’t even have to stop for fuel…

I have ancestry in Memphis (Dad told stories of hanging out in front of Sun records to see who was recording that day) and have been there often. It's...an interesting town. There's the tourist side and there's the don't-go-after-dark side. And yeah, when the sun goes down, stick to the tourist districts.

Farmington is an equally interesting town. I was there years ago on business, pulling samples from a wildcat drilling op. Only place I've ever been that had a Mexican-Irish pub with a sushi menu. I ordered the burger.

I've been there more times I care to admit.

At first I put in a hard rule of no more 13+ hour drives, but then quickly amended to no more 8 hour drives. My last three trips I targeted a max of 6 hours per day wheel time even if it meant being stuck in between the "fun" parts of the country, and I wound up loving it better than pushing through.

Sure, the overnight layovers between home and my destination weren't very scenic, but I was in a much better mood with time to hike, explore, and find a nice dinner. It's made for better road trips. Kind of weird.

I've driven to Johnson Valley CA from Seattle for King of the Hammers twice in 1 shot. Around 1200 miles, and around 19.5-20 hours with gas stops and food, no naps.

I've done 970km in one day on a mission. Had to drive up to a storage unit in my old town, load a toolbox into my truck and a whole whack of other stuff and bring it call back. Ended up stopping for a close to 1.5hr to capture the northern lights until 4:45am. Wouldn't change it for the world but I don't think I'd want to push more than that in a day; especially because it took about 14 hours for the full trip when it's a solid 5 hour there, 5 hour back, or significantly less when you drive at night when the aurora aren't dancing overhead.

Did the same trip with our dog who has awful car anxiety. We ended up having our vet prescribe a small dose of trazodone and she was very comfortable.

The worst is not distance honestly. The worst is time and company or lack thereof. I plan on doing some far north trips and I mean into the Territories to the arctic ocean... but not just Tuktoyaktuk. The distance is somewhat short for most stretches but the conditions can cause for a slow, grueling, dangerous drive.

8Hrs was my target time on my 3-day trip from Dover, Delaware to Holloman AFB/Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Well-rested for the next day and in a good mood. :)

Once a few years back I was traveling for work and got stuck in a snow storm in Newark, NJ. My Friday morning flight home was canceled, and as the time for the alternate flight they put me on approached that got canceled as well. Long story short my choices were to wait in a hotel by EWR until the following Tuesday and catch a flight out, or rent a car and get the hell outta Dodge. I chose the latter. It was a significant snow but once I got past D.C. the roads were clear. I drove to the SC-NC border that first day, stayed for an overnight, and left at sunrise the next day. I made it to Port St. Lucie FL by 2:30 that afternoon.

600 miles in a day seems to be about my comfort zone. Any more than that and fatigue starts to set in, which can be dangerous.

750 Miles from northern Detroit to SW CT. Look longer than maps was showing when I used the stock navigation so conserve my phone battery, but it was scenic and felt great to be in a new truck. There were some roads in OH that were beautiful running along the great lakes down 269.

Solid idea, but I don't know what your shelters are like, but the shelters around me are probably 99% pit bulls. Zero chance I would bring one of those home to my family.

I just did an Upland hunting trip to Montana with my pointing dog for a total of 2,000 + miles. I would recommend a crate for your dog, or at least a harness with a seatbelt attachment. Also try to keep bathroom stops (you and the dog) regular , as well as making time for feeding, and make sure you have dog poop bags and water.
Regarding buying from a breeder; breeders (like pet owners) vary widely in quality. Really research the breeder you are buying from. Get the dog you want and don't let people guilt you into "only" getting rescues. Its really not the fault of responsible owners that irresponsible pet owners can't seem to spay or neuter pitbulls, chihuahuas, labs, etc. or keep them in their yards.

I asked our youngest daughter...who is studying to be a Vet Tech (and graduates in 2023) what her thoughts are about:

    Buying from Breeder
    Acquiring from Shelter

"If you know what type of dog you want (personality/traits/expectations) then buying from breeder is the way to go."
"Shelter dogs get a bad rap for being abandoned. We don't know what they've been through."

In either case, there must be dedication to caring for your adopted 4-legged friend. On the rare occasion, there are pure breeds that end up in shelters.

My daughter stressed that if there isn't tolerance for adopting, don't start the process to begin with.

Our eldest had been wanting a Cavalier King Charles (CKC) for the longest time. Our youngest was working at the local SPCA and told her about the Cavalier that came in one day. Everything fell into place and now our daughter has her CKC in brown/black/white. (Tri-color)

Eldest needed a lap dog for companionship to help her with anxiety/therapy and viola!

One time, and only 1 time, I drove across Kansas on that 70. I finally got close to Misery when I saw a tree. I had to wake everyone up to see the tree.
