Miles per gallon went down, but smiles per gallon went up!

Not something I’m crying about, but I do think it’s pretty wild I went from 22-23mpg to 15-16mpg, based on the fact most people claim only 1-2mpg loss.

I had stock Sport wheels, 265/65r17 Firestone. Now 16” Trail Edition wheels with 265/75r16 Wildpeaks (SL). I’m at 32psi. And I did not have an alignment done. It feels as though it drives perfectly fine, doesn’t feel like I’m pushing the gas pedal any harder than I was to go the same speed, but I can see the mpg indicator is MUCH lower than where it was with the old tires. Is it possible an alignment will improve anything significantly with the larger tires / different offset?

An alignment can't hurt, but that much difference is odd.

At 25k, I went from stock Toyos to 265/70R17 SL WPs and saw a very small hit to the MPGs, mainly on the highway. I also got a Softopper at about the same time. Swapped to Nokian Outpost SLs 55k later. No real change in MPGs. Then added -10mm offset wheels of the same weight (about 24lb). No real change there. Still average about 20mpg overall.

The extra 1/2in of clearance was actually noticeable and appreciated. The increased track width made a noticeable difference in handling also.

Is this per mpg indicator, or calculated?

    Take your FS and :jerkoff:
Notice I said the car drives fine, thus concluding my alignment was accurate …and I’m well aware of the increased tire size. I found it odd SOLELY in comparison to the reports from others with the same tires. Jeez hardo over here

If the computer's MPG info was in the ballpark to start with, the change would max out at about 5% or +1mpg at 20 average.

    I did 16x8 ET0 wheels with 265/75/16 Wildpeaks and I get 17-18mpg combined.

I took a good hit when I first upgraded to 33’s, but seems like once the transmission spent some time relearning, it recovered a lot. Also don’t forget that with the larger tire circumference, you travel farther with each rotation than before, so you need to multiply by the percentage increase to compare apples to apples.

17 to 18 mpg with 265/75/16 duratrac on stock off-road long bed 2017 taco normal driving. Can get 19 mpg if I want to but where’s the fun in that. 20mpg on long drive below 70 mph . Mpg indicated not calculated

For the first 9k miles on the truck I wrote down mileage at each fill up, and divided how many miles since last fill up / how many gallons to fill up again. ODO was pretty spot on in comparison to the mile markers on the highway. And the mpg indicator was always pretty spot on with my calculations.

So now, thanks to @Kilo Charlie , with the fancy online calculator, I know the circumference of the new tires is 3.41 inches larger. Which means my tires are spinning about 32 fewer times per mile than the ODO/computer thinks (Original 265/65)

Again, just bizarre the hit I took was 6-8mpg rather than 1-2 people were claiming - which is why I posted this in the first place.

Maybe the quality of gas you put into the truck changed?

That’s too much of a diff for it to be solely on tires. I moved to that size too and the mpg change was minimal.

    - ICON UCAs, BP51/Kings, SCS wheels, 285s, Leer 100XR canopy. Greenlane aluminum winch bumper, Smittybilt X20 winch. Trying Falken AT3w now, Really like BF KO2s.
That mpg sucks, I do better with my 2013 on 285s C load 51lbs. Your prob driving 75mph often or something like that.

Not at all, in my ST yes, but in this my wife yells at me for going 60 in the right lane in a 65, not passing the slow cars.

BP, same station I always use. And the MPG was fine on the way to the tire shop, immediately changed on the way home.

Does it really matter, assuming the same method is used for both MPGs?
