4x4 or prerunner

I'm trying to choose. I drove a 2006 4x4 tonight with a stick. loved it, but it was pretty basic. Steel wheels, no extras and the bed was really short.

I'd like to get a 4x4 with Stick but do I really need the 4x4? Sure I have dreams of riding in the hills and camping, and riding in the mountains, but in reality how often will I use it? The prerunners are nice packages and cost less...

I'm going through the same thing you are. I wondered about getting the 4x4 but came to the decision that a Prerunner at the same height and most of the same options would be better, just because it's cheaper and look the same as the 4x4.

 

I would recommend the 4x4 if you can swing the extra $$. I think they are well worth it. If you don't get it, you may find yourself wishing that you did down the road. But, it is up to you... all Tacomas are great, anyway.

 

Before you go to your favorite dealer with a list of what you might want, be prepared for them to tell you that you can only get certain packages for certain regions. In this region (Chicago) you can only get the Sport in a double cab and 4x4, towing package, and floor mats. You cannot add anything else, they are all the same. Your only option is color and transmission as they are all V6. Thought this was nuts but after 3 dealers told me the same thing and after looking at their inventories I cannot argue. Toyota has nine sales regions. All are different.The most flexibility of choices is said to be on the west coast. Ended up with the Off Road package, tow package, floor mats. Wanted the 6 CD changer. No can get and its not a dealer installed option.

 

I'm currently on the market for a Tacoma.. Im moving from NYC to Orlando and checked out dealers from both locations..

NYC has a crapload of 4x4s in double and access cabs..but no Pre-runner double cabs.

Orlando has a host of 4x2 double-cab prerunners...

I've already decided on mine and have spoken to a dealer. I'm hoping to have some good news in 7-9 days.

 

Go 4x4 man it's alittle Xtra but if you use it only once it's worth it.

 

I went through the exact same thinking as you did before I bought the Tacoma. It would be nice if Toyota didn't give us a choice and made them all straight 4x4.

As much as I wanted a 4x4, I opted to go with the Prerunner on my Tacoma. I don't do enough things to warrant me paying the extra cash for the 4x4. I do some occasional camping, but nothing heavy duty. I mainly drive my truck around town. I figured if I got stuck, the locking rear differential would help me in most situations. Plus, I thought it would potentially be another thing that could break.

DO you really need a 4x4? The benefit of 4x4 is obviously having it if you need it, and also it has a better resale value than the Pre-Runner. Just some things to consider.

 

I went with a 4x4 and a 4cyl, the price was the same maybe a little more with the V6. The mileage is better and the 4x4 will get you in and out of more places than a V6 2wd will. Less to maintain on a 2wd and they do look nice. The beauty of it is you have a choice, I would test drive every different truck they have and take the time to decide. I got the Pre-runner and now wish I had 4X4--since I'm doing a little hunting and need the assurance that I will able to get in and out of the woods.

 

4x4 you never know when you might need it

you could get stuck in2wd pullin of on the side of the road somewhere

 

I'm in a similar position, however I'm trying to decide if I should get a 4x4 Tacoma, or just get a Prerunner and then later on buy a trail rig. Like an older Jeep or 4Runner.

4x4 I went camping the first week I bought my truck. And on a road that is 2wd friendly I got stuck in 2wd due to rain the day before locked it in 4 low and crawled right out. The first thing i said to myself is dam I'm glad I didn't buy a Prerunner.

 

In the 9 years I drove my 4x4 2000 Tundra I've needed 4x4 exactly 0 times. I drive to Tahoe in the winter and go camping up in the Tahoe National Forest in the summer and never encountered a situation where I needed it.

While I did want a 4x4 when looking to buy a Tacoma, I couldn't find any with the TRD Off Road pkg. and color I was looking for (MGM or Pyrite Mica) so, I opted for a PreRunner. Since I don't plan on ever going mudding or rock crawling, I figured the rear locker will be enough for any driving conditions I will likely ever encounter.

 

I have a Prerunner, but if I had to do it over I would have gotten the 4x4. I love my Prerunner and never needed the 4x, but I guess when I take my truck out camping and hiking, in the snow and up logging roads it would have given me a better sense of security. It really depends if you do activities that would warrant you getting a 4x4.

 

I have an 05 prerunner and i take it camping a couple times a year. I've had it for five years now and i've never got stuck or anything. keep in mind i upgraded the tires to bfg A/T so that helps. i've even taken it off roadin' at gorman a few times. I think 4x4 trucks kick ass but the prerunner is more than enough for me.

 

if 4x4 has ever even crossd your mind then get it. if you dont you will probably regret it. Wheels and everythign else can always be upgraded. Idealy thats the best way to go about it, buy a base model and mod it to your liking.
