that big freeze in texas where my Mom was out of power for days really got me thinking about this stuff. Its pretty straightforward, just a pain to keep and maintain stuff you might never need.

That's how I felt last month with the 1st round of snow. We bought a Jackery 1000watt solar generator with 2 panels. It's paid it's self off already. Highly recommend it. I do have a 6500 watt gas generator but I don't really want to fire it up yet. It can power my gas furnace pretty easy. The wood stove does a pretty good job heating the house. It's already 62° up stairs from just wood.

Nice. Similar thinking got me into a ecoflow river pro and a 200W panel. It /might/ do my furnace, but its pretty much at the limits of the built in inverter (600W if you care about maintaining perfect output, 1800W if you go into "x mode")

Those wood stoves are awesome. We had one in the cabin last month and it was not only constant source of entertainment, it kept the place cozy as long as we stoked it. I also really enjoyed the noise it made.

EDIT: Back of the napkin math says I need ~3.6 kWh per day to run my furnace 25% of the time. Hmmm, i might need a lot of batteries if it gets cold.

I need to collect firewood again at this house but I don’t own a chainsaw. My old landlord cut down all the trees on the property in 2020 so I burned them throughout that freeze.

I haven't used my fireplace yet but I suppose I should have some wood in the yard just in case. I have enough to run it for a night, maybe

There are lots of great kids cartoon that work in adult humor subtly so that parents will want to watch with their children.... educational programming is oddly enough not usually one of the segments that does this though.

The older episodes of Sesame Street from the Jim Henson days had a lot of that, Kermit would crack some good one liners now and then

this lends itself to so many good captions but for some reason I'm having trouble thinking of the best one lol.
